What does it mean to be a leader?

On Tuesday evening, our Junior Fellows explored that question during a Value-Centered Leadership Workshop with Jewish Community Services (JCS). Through reflection and discussion, fellows examined their own leadership styles, identified leaders who inspire them, and collaborated to design projects that could positively impact the community with just $500 to get started.

The activity challenged students to think creatively, lead with their values, and imagine how even small investments can spark meaningful change. We're proud of their thoughtful ideas and commitment to making a difference.

ECYP Senior Spotlight: Madisyn ✨

Madisyn joined ECYP because of her curiosity about different cultures and her desire to better understand people whose experiences may be different from her own.

Since then, she's explored new perspectives, engaged in meaningful conversations, and built lasting relationships across diverse communities. Some of her favorite ECYP experiences include attending the Congressional Black Caucus and traveling to Eastern Europe, where she gained firsthand insight into cultures and communities beyond her own.

Through ECYP, Madisyn has learned that leadership is about staying curious, building connections, and finding ways to make a difference.

Mentorship starts with connection—and last night, our Junior Fellows took the first step toward becoming impactful mentors!

During their first KIPP/ECYP Mentorship Program training, fellows gained a deeper understanding of the mentorship model and explored what it truly means to be a mentor. They learned practical mentoring tips and strategies, discussed ways to build meaningful relationships, and practiced having productive, supportive conversations with their mentees.

We’re excited to see our Junior Fellows step into their roles as mentors and make a positive impact on the next generation of young leaders!

Yesterday, our ECYP Fellows spent the first day of The Congressional Black Caucus’s Annual Legislative Conference, attending sessions led by leaders from across the United States, including Baltimore’s own Mayor Brandon M. Scott. They gained valuable insights on issues impacting the Black community, including voting rights, economic empowerment, and Black mental health.
It was an important and inspiring day of learning, leadership, and engagement.
