Abdominal Cancers Alliance The Abdominal Cancers Alliance is an initiative of Partners for Cancer Care and Prevention a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Abdominal Cancers Alliance is committed to saving lives and improving quality of life by connecting those facing abdominal cancers to the information and support that they need in their fight against abdominal cancers, including rare and advanced gastrointestinal and gynecologic malignancies. We are patients and survivors, caregivers and families, clinicians, and organizations - all working to

gether to shift the paradigms keeping so many from reaching the care they need in time. By raising awareness with the public and care providers, making connections to resources and care, and guiding patient and caregiver navigation throughout the cancer journey, we aim to see that every patient reaches the care they need.

This Appendix Cancer Awareness Month, the Abdominal Cancers Alliance and the ACPMP - Appendix Cancer / Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Research Foundation are working together to help patients and families better understand their treatment options.

There is no single treatment plan for appendix cancer. The right approach depends on the type of tumor, its grade, whether the cancer has spread, and each person's individual situation. That's why evaluation by a multidisciplinary team with experience treating appendix cancer can be so important.

Treatment may include:
🔹 Surgery
🔹 Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC for carefully selected patients
🔹 Systemic chemotherapy
🔹 Active surveillance for some low-grade tumors
🔹 Clinical trials

Knowledge empowers patients to ask informed questions, seek appropriate specialty care, and make treatment decisions with confidence.

🧪💊 Not all "chemo in the belly" treatments are the same — knowing the difference can change how you talk to your care team. 🎗️ For patients with peritoneal cancers, doctors now have three intraperitoneal (IP) chemo options: standard IP chemo, HIPEC, and PIPAC, each delivering treatment directly to the abdominal cavity but differing in how it's given, when it's used, and what it aims to achieve. 🔬 HIPEC is typically a single heated treatment performed after cytoreductive surgery once all visible tumors are removed, standard IP chemo is delivered through a catheter over multiple sessions often alongside IV chemo, and PIPAC is a newer, minimally invasive laparoscopic mist treatment that can be repeated over time — usually for patients whose cancer can't be fully removed surgically. 🩺 These aren't competing treatments — they're different tools that may fit different points in a patient's cancer journey, and your healthcare team can help determine which, if any, is right for you. 💛 Understanding your options is powerful — learn more and share this with someone.

Research on peritoneal cancer staging: a study comparing CT scans, diagnostic laparoscopy, and surgery found that while CT imaging 🩻 offers a solid first look at how much cancer has spread across the abdominal lining, it often underestimates the true extent found once surgeons are operating 🔬 — and in a smaller subset of patients, laparoscopy 📷 came closer to matching what was actually seen during surgery. Since the laparoscopy group was small and mostly gastric cancer patients, researchers say bigger studies are needed, but the takeaway for now is clear: accurate staging matters 🎯 for deciding whether cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is the right path, and patients should talk with their care team 🩺 about which staging tools fit their situation.

This **Appendix Cancer Awareness Month**, the **Abdominal Cancers Alliance** and the **Appendix Cancer PMP Research Foundation (ACPMP)** are working together to help more patients understand the importance of a thorough appendix cancer evaluation.

Appendix cancer is rare, and no two diagnoses are exactly alike. That's why understanding your **pathology, stage, and whether the cancer has spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum)** is so important. These details help guide treatment decisions and determine whether a consultation with specialists experienced in appendix cancer and peritoneal surface malignancies may be beneficial.

A comprehensive evaluation may include:
