Storytelling + cooking = a recipe for learning! 📚👩🏾‍🍳

In Storybook Cooks, our youngest chefs learn how stories, food, and creativity can come together in the kitchen. In this session, our girls learned how to make taco salads while getting hands-on experience preparing the taco meat—from adding it to the pan and browning the meat to seasoning it just right. 🌮🥗

For girls ages 5–8, these early experiences are more than just learning a recipe. They’re an introduction to cooking, exploring new foods, building confidence, and developing skills that can grow with them.

We love creating space for our youngest chefs to get curious in the kitchen!

Kitchen safety is ALWAYS on the menu. 👩🏾‍🍳🔪

Our girls are learning the little things that make a BIG difference—from carrying a knife safely to using their voices in a busy kitchen and calling out when opening a hot oven.

Because being a great chef means knowing how to keep yourself and your kitchen crew safe. 💜

Food isn’t just about what’s on our plate—it’s about access.

During a recent field trip to Black-owned Whitelock Community Farm, our girls learned from Jennifer West about food deserts and why access to fresh, healthy food isn’t equal for every community. They explored how many neighborhoods have plenty of corner stores stocked with processed foods, but limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables—and how that contributes to chronic diseases that disproportionately impact our communities.

These conversations matter. Because when we teach our girls where food comes from, why food equity matters, and how they can be part of the solution, we’re cultivating more than future chefs—we’re growing future leaders, advocates, and changemakers.

Consider supporting our mission to ensure every girl has opportunities like this. Your donation helps us provide hands-on culinary education, urban farming experiences, and life-changing programs that empower the next generation.

Living and learning in Baltimore, it was only right that our girls learned how to prepare one of the city’s most iconic dishes—homemade crab cakes. 🦀

Alongside perfectly cooked salmon and a fresh watermelon salad, our young chefs explored seafood preparation, knife skills, seasoning, and balanced meals.

Cooking is about more than following a recipe. It’s about understanding the history, culture, and traditions behind the food we eat. By connecting our lessons to the communities around us, we’re helping our girls build confidence in the kitchen while celebrating the rich culinary traditions that shape our culture.
