Mountain Club of Maryland Our members lead hikes every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Members also support trail work in Patapsco Valley State Park.

Founded in 1934 to help build the Appalachian Trail, the Club is currently one of 31 clubs that maintain the AT for all to enjoy. We are hikers, primarily and foremost, the oldest hiking club in Maryland (since 1934) and the premier hiking group in the state. We are a Baltimore-based volunteer organization that is centered on hiking. We support Leave No Trace principles, work on local trails and o

n the nation's first National Scenic Trail, the Appalachian Trail. We organize and lead hikes and other outdoor activities, such as camping, seasonal canoe trips and backpacking weekends. We offer seasonal canoe trips and backpacking ventures. We have a year-round schedule with hikes in local parks and paths, in State Parks, National Parks, National Forests, and sites in and around Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.

Pine Grove Furnace / Sunset Rocks / Pole Steep (14 miles, Wednesday August 19, 2026): A figure eight hike through Pennsylvania’s Michaux State Forest with an accumulated 2100 feet of elevation gain. We started at Pine Grove Furnace State Park and hiked the southern loop through Tom’s Run Valley along the Appalachian Trail; and traversed the half mile boulder scramble called Sunset Rocks. After lunch at Pine Grove Furnace, the northern loop began in an old railroad bed, followed the shoreline of Laurel Lake, ascended to the Pole Steeple overlook, returned to the Appalachian Trail and back to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Have you been to the halfway point on the Appalachian Trail near Tom’s Run Shelter south of the Pine Grove Furnace State Park?

Hike Around Belmont (7.5 miles, Wednesday August 19, 2026): This hike left from the Rockburn Branch Park Recreation Center, crossed Landing Road and continued, initially following the Morning Choice Trail. There was about 700 feet of elevation gain and there were two stream crossings. Have you been to the Belmont Manor Cemetery next to the trail?

Woodstock Area (5 miles, Tuesday August 19, 2026): This was a 5-mile lollipop hike with about 500 feet of elevation gain. We were on the south side of the river between Woodstock, from where headed downstream along the river and through a wooded area toward (but not to) Daniels Dam before looping back upstream along the river to Woodstock.

Conestoga Trail, Holtwood, PA (13 miles, Saturday August 15, 2026): We hiked from the Holtwood Recreation Area to River View Overlook on this beautiful and challenging section of the Conestoga Trail. Highlights included Pinnacle Overlook, Kelly’s Run, Tucquan Glen Nature Preserve and many rocky outcroppings with excellent views of the Susquehanna River. Bacon Ridge Natural Area (9 miles, Saturday August 15, 2026): This is a beautiful park near the Crownsville area in Anne Arundel County, MD. The trails are well maintained and not overly rocky. We started at the Hawkins Road Parking area, hiked around Box Turtle Loop Trail to the Wolf Trail loop. This was an out and back trail that turned around near a meadow area near a farm road access roadway. Have you hiked in Bacon Ridge?
