Mountain Club of Maryland Great Hiking Starts Here! Our members lead hikes every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Check out our hike schedule on our website (http://mcomd.org).

We are hikers, primarily and foremost, the oldest hiking club in Maryland (since 1934) and the premier hiking group in the state. We are a Baltimore-based volunteer organization that is centered on hiking. We support Leave No Trace principles, work on local trails and on the nation's first National Scenic Trail, the Appalachian Trail. We organize and lead hikes and other outdoor activities, such as camping, seasonal canoe trips and backpacking weekends. We offer seasonal canoe trips and backpacking ventures. We have a year-round schedule with hikes in local parks and paths, in State Parks, National Parks, National Forests, and sites in and around Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.

Appalachian Trail Maintenance - Native Vegetation Enclosures (Thursday October 8, 2026): This project was to remove old plastic fencing and install new metal fencing to protect native plants from deer in a native plant research project along the AT. It's been going on for some years, and the old deer exclusion fencing has deteriorated substantially. Are you interested in helping with Appalachian Trail maintenance in the future?

Rockhaven (7.5 miles, Thursday October 8, 2026): This hike included the Rockhaven and Pickall areas. We started the hike on the New Rocks Trail. We crossed under the Route 40 bridge to take the Devil’s Horn trail for a 2-mile loop in the Pickall area before returning to Rockhaven. On the way back we checked on the Grandfather Clock, then returned on the Mill Race Trail. Have you seen the Grandfather Clock in this area? How do you think it was installed?

Appalachian Trail Pennsylvania - Michaux State Forest Chimney Rock (13 miles, Wednesday October 7, 2026): This hike proceeded along the Pennsylvania AT from the Old Forge Picnic Area north over Chimney Rocks toward PA Route 233, while also following several side trails. We begin by climbing 1,100 feet over the first 3 miles to the top of Chimney Rocks, passing Tumbling Run Shelter along the way. Once on the ridge, we proceeded across undulating terrain. Our hike had a total ascent of about 2,200 feet. Have you hiked this section of the Appalachian Trail?

Prettyboy Reservoir – Georges Creek to Shamberger’s Peninsula (9.5 miles, Wednesday October 7, 2026): Our hike began on the west side of Georges Creek at Prettyboy Reservoir. We followed the Prettyboy Trail and hiked up to Shamberger’s Peninsula. The Shamberger Trail is an old “horse and buggy” road. We hiked part way down Shamberger’s Peninsula and had an awesome lunch spot with a fantastic view. The water was low and we walked along “the beach” and saw a bear footprint. Rockburn Park to Hanging Bridge (8 miles, Wednesday October 7, 2026): We began in Rockburn Park and hiked across to Patapsco Valley State Park. Patapsco Valley State Park / Grist Mill Trail / Lost Lake (6.5 miles, Wednesday October 7, 2026): 31 hikers walked to the second Swinging Bridge with awesome views along the way. Patapsco Valley State Park – Daniels Area (4 miles, Sunday October 4, 2026): This was a 4- mile, 2-hour, moderate hike in Patapsco Valley State Park through the Daniels Area. We followed the Daniels Trail through beautiful woods and along the Patapsco River. The route also took us through the area surrounding Camel’s Den and remnants of Patapsco’s fascinating industrial and railroad history. Have you visited Camel’s Den Cave?

Carrie Way to Daniels Dam (7.5 miles, Saturday October 3, 2026): The hike traveled down toward the Patapsco and turned east through the hills to the south of the river, then down to Daniels Dam for a 20-minute lunch and then back along the river and through the hills on our return.
