🎉 What an incredible way to close out the 2026 Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp! 🖤

We’re honored that WMAR-2 WMAR-2 News Baltimore joined us to capture the excitement of our STEM Showcase and share the inspiring work of our campers with the Baltimore community. Thank you to the entire WMAR-2 team for highlighting the importance of investing in the next generation of innovators.

Over the past six weeks, our campers explored chemistry, engineering, coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, environmental science, and mathematics, learned from industry professionals, visited STEM-focused destinations, and built projects they proudly presented to STEM judges, family, and friends.

More importantly, we watched young people discover new passions, build confidence, solve problems, and realize that they belong in STEM.

To our campers, families, staff, volunteers, judges, sponsors, and partners—thank you for making this summer one we will never forget. It was truly our privilege to serve Baltimore’s youth, and we are incredibly proud of everything our campers accomplished.

This may mark the end of camp, but it’s only the beginning of what these young Dreamers & Doers will achieve.

🤖 Week 6 is officially underway, and we’re exploring the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence! 🖤

We were honored to kick off our final week of Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp with an outstanding presentation from Mr. Taavon Peoples, Lead Software Engineer at T. Rowe Price and Ph.D. student at Morgan State University, where his research focuses on Advanced and Equitable Computing and Quantum Machine Learning Algorithms.

As a proud Baltimore Polytechnic Institute graduate, Mr. Peoples shared his journey from Baltimore classrooms to leading software engineering teams while pursuing cutting-edge research that is helping shape the future of computing and AI. Our campers learned not only about the incredible possibilities of Artificial Intelligence, but also about the importance of curiosity, perseverance, and lifelong learning.

Today’s session was especially meaningful because Mr. Peoples is also a member of the Black SONs Board of Directors and chaired the committee responsible for developing our Artificial Intelligence curriculum. His leadership helped shape the learning experiences our students will engage in throughout the week, making today’s presentation the perfect launch into our final STEM theme.

🚀 What a way to close out Robotics & Automation Week! 🤖✈️🖤

Today, our Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp campers traveled to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where they stood face-to-face with the aircraft, spacecraft, and innovations that have shaped our world and inspired generations of explorers, engineers, and scientists.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. After spending the week designing, building, and programming LEGO robots, our campers experienced firsthand how the same engineering principles they’re learning today have fueled some of humanity’s greatest achievements.

It’s hard to believe we’ve already completed five incredible weeks of camp.

Over the course of this summer, our students have:
🧪 Conducted hands-on chemistry experiments.
⚙️ Designed and engineered creative solutions.
🌿 Explored nature and environmental science.
💻 Built games and learned coding.
🤖 Designed, built, and programmed autonomous robots.
🚍 Traveled across the region on unforgettable STEM field trips.
🎤 Learned from inspiring STEM professionals, entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators who have poured into them each week.

Most importantly, they’ve grown in confidence, curiosity, teamwork, and the belief that they can solve real-world problems through STEM.

At Black SONs, that’s exactly what we’re working to accomplish. Our mission is to expand access to high-quality STEM opportunities, strengthen math and science proficiency, and help young people across Baltimore discover that they already possess the brilliance to become tomorrow’s engineers, scientists, innovators, and leaders.

Now, we turn our attention to our final week—Artificial Intelligence Week! 🤖✨

Our campers will explore one of the fastest-growing technologies in the world before showcasing everything they’ve learned throughout the summer at our Dreamers & Doers STEM Showcase next Friday.

The finish line is in sight, and we can’t wait to celebrate what these incredible young minds have accomplished.

Today, our Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp campers had the privilege of learning from Shawna Stepp-Jones, hardware engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and Founder of Divaneering Lab, Inc. 🖤✨

Through her inspiring presentation, “The Inventor In You: Every Great Invention Begins With a Problem,” Shawna challenged our students to see the world differently. She reminded them that innovation isn’t just about creating something new—it’s about recognizing problems, asking questions, and having the courage to develop solutions that make people’s lives better.

As the inventor of Spundle, the first no-heat dryer transforming the wig and weave care industry, Shawna shared how identifying a real-world problem led to an invention with the potential to impact millions. Her journey from West Baltimore to becoming a successful engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and former U.S. Patent Examiner demonstrated that big ideas can come from anywhere—including our own communities.

More importantly, Shawna poured into our students. She encouraged them to believe in their creativity, embrace challenges, and recognize that they already possess the curiosity and imagination needed to become tomorrow’s innovators.

At Black SONs, we believe that exposing young people to STEM professionals who are actively changing the world helps them envision what’s possible for themselves. Today’s session was a powerful reminder that the next great inventor, engineer, or entrepreneur may already be sitting in one of our classrooms.

Today, our Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp campers had the opportunity to learn from Ethan Joyner, a Mechatronics Engineer, graduate student, and mentor with FIRST Robotics and ASME Outreach Programs. 🖤🤖

Ethan shared his journey from Baltimore to becoming an engineer, giving our students an inside look at the exciting world of mechatronics, robotics, and engineering innovation. From designing reconnaissance robots and working with medical robotics startups to contributing to rocket launch platforms and mentoring future engineers, Ethan demonstrated what is possible through hard work, curiosity, and perseverance.

What made today’s experience even more special was that Ethan didn’t just talk about engineering—he brought it to life. Through engaging, hands-on activities, our campers were challenged to think critically, collaborate, problem-solve, and experience the engineering design process firsthand. The room was filled with excitement, creativity, and plenty of “aha!” moments.

At Black SONs, we believe that students are inspired not only by what they learn, but by who they meet. Connecting our campers with STEM professionals who look like them and are actively shaping the future helps them see that these careers are within their reach.

One of the highlights of this week was welcoming Jamie from the Baltimore Children & Youth Fund (BCYF) to Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp! 🖤

As the primary funder of this program, BCYF’s investment has made it possible for us to provide an incredible summer of STEM learning and enrichment for Baltimore’s youth. We are deeply grateful for their belief in our mission and their commitment to expanding opportunities for young people across our city.

During his visit, Jamie had the opportunity to see our campers fully engaged in Robotics & Automation Week, where students were designing, building, and coding LEGO robots to solve real-world engineering challenges. He also joined us in the Coppin State University Athletic Center, where our campers balanced rigorous STEM learning with recreation, teamwork, and fun.

The most rewarding part of the visit was hearing Jamie repeatedly express how impressed he was by what our students were accomplishing. Watching our campers confidently explain their ideas, problem-solve, collaborate, and bring their creations to life was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given access to meaningful opportunities and adults who believe in their potential.

At Black SONs, our mission extends far beyond teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are working to inspire the next generation of innovators, strengthen math and science proficiency, expand access to high-quality STEM experiences, and help young people across Baltimore see themselves as future engineers, scientists, programmers, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

🚂 All aboard for another incredible day of STEM learning! 🔧⚡

Today, our Dreamers & Doers had the privilege of learning from Mr. Joshua Hampton, a Diesel Locomotive Electrician with CSX Transportation, who introduced students to the fascinating world of Positive Train Control (PTC)—the advanced technology that helps keep our nation’s railways safer and more efficient.

Mr. Hampton shared how his passion for electronics began while attending Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, eventually leading him to earn both an Engineering degree and an MBA before building an 18-year career with CSX. His journey reminded our students that hard work, education, and perseverance can open doors to incredible opportunities.

Beyond the technical knowledge, Mr. Hampton encouraged our campers to pursue their passions, stay curious, and always put God first. We are grateful for the time he invested in inspiring the next generation of engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers.

🎮🧠🚀 That’s a wrap on Game Design & Coding Week!

Today, our Dreamers & Doers STEM Camp wrapped up an incredible week with an exciting STEM field trip to Dave & Buster’s! Before the fun began, our campers participated in hands-on STEM activities centered around physics and Newton’s Laws of Motion, discovering how concepts like force, motion, acceleration, and energy are applied in the games they play every day.

After fueling up with lunch, our campers enjoyed the arcade, where they were able to experience many of those same STEM principles in action while making lasting memories with their friends.

This week has been an amazing journey—from learning to code with Minecraft Education, hearing from professionals in game design, digital art, and civil engineering, to ending the week with a real-world STEM experience that brought science, technology, engineering, and math together in a fun and engaging way.

At Black SONs, we’re intentional about helping students connect what they learn in the classroom to the world around them. Every activity, guest speaker, and field trip is designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and show our campers that STEM is everywhere.

Now, it’s on to Robotics & Automation Week! 🤖 We’re excited to challenge our campers to think like engineers as they begin designing, building, and programming robots to solve real-world problems.

The learning continues, and we can’t wait to see what they’ll create next. 🖤

🛣️🧩 Engineering is all around us—even beneath our feet.

Today, our Dreamers & Doers campers had the privilege of learning from Mr. Travis Vance, Engineering Manager with the Maryland State Highway Administration, who challenged our students to think differently about the roads, bridges, and infrastructure we rely on every single day.

Mr. Vance shared how civil engineers solve complex problems by designing roadways, investigating sinkholes, analyzing the ground beneath us, and working with teams to build safe, reliable infrastructure that keeps our communities connected. He also inspired our campers by sharing his entrepreneurial journey as Co-Founder of Vance Investments, demonstrating that engineering skills can create opportunities both in public service and in business.

One of the biggest takeaways for our students was that engineering is like solving a giant puzzle—every project requires creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and perseverance to find the best solution.

As we continue Game Design & Coding Week, today’s session was a powerful reminder that the same problem-solving mindset our campers use to build games and write code is also used by engineers to design the world around us.
