Earlier this week, Appalachian Voices submitted a letter signed by nearly 4,000 people urging the Trump administration’s newly appointed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Lee Zeldin, to develop new protections from coal dust that blows off of trains, contaminating waterways and posing serious public health risks. For starters, coal trains should be required to get Clean Water Act permits. Read all about it: https://appvoices.org/2025/02/04/thousands-urge-epa-to-regulate-coal-dust/

Some industrious elves brought the Christmas magic to Governor Wes Moore last night in Annapolis, and put coal in his stocking once more to remind him that he’s on the naughty list, along with Maryland Dept. Of The Environment, for ignoring Curtis Bay’s basic need for clean air and healthy living conditions. Instead, Gov Moore has ignored Curtis Bay’s invitation to visit in person and MDE appears to be ready to allow CSX to continue operating a dirty coal pier in the neighborhood that releases coal dust into the air day and night. There’s still time to deny the permit!

Community of Curtis Bay Association board member and resident David Jones shows us what it would be like if the State House and the Governor's mansion were across the street from the CSX coal terminal. On Dec 7 we joined David, South Baltimore Community Land Trust, Food & Water Watch - Maryland, Progressive Maryland, Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility and many others to call on Governor Wes Moore to do the right thing and stand up for the health and well being of Curtis Bay.

Thank you to everyone who wrote to the Maryland Dept. Of The Environment urging regulators *not* to renew CSX's operating permit for its coal terminal in the Curtis Bay neighborhood of Baltimore.

Governor Wes Moore gets coal in his stocking this year! In our final act in Annapolis on Saturday, members of Coal-Free Curtis Bay brought a giant Christmas stocking to the gate of the governor's mansion. The stocking was filled with coal and messages from the community for Governor Moore, who has been unresponsive to pleas from the community to meet with them and address chronic health issues caused by coal dust from the CSX coal pier in their community.

Curtis Bay resident David Jones in front of the Annapolis state house speaking out about the environmental injustices and chronic health issues the community faces due to the CSX coal pier in their community. The CSX coal pier and the CONSOL Energy coal pier across the water make the Port of Baltimore the second largest coal exporter in the U.S.
