Hey now, Blues fans! Who remembers when the Hot August Music Festival used to be Hot August Blues? Well that was 12 years ago, and Music Matters, the non-profit behind the Hot August Music Festival, is putting on a special tribute on Friday, 8/21 with Eric Gales, Vanessa Collier, and Jonathan Sloane in the lineup (This is the day before the regular Music Festival on Saturday, 8/22). Doors at 4:30, music 5:30 - 10:00 pm. Oregon Ridge Park is located at 13401 Beaver Dam Rd., Cockeysville, MD 21030.
The Baltimore Blues Society (BBS) has a long history with Hot August at Oregon Ridge. Founded by BBS member (and OG), Brad Selko in 1993, Hot August Blues started on his farm in Monkton, MD to raise money for the BBS as a small, one-stage, "hang-out" event for friends, with 400 people attending the first year (Brad's late wife, Marcia was BBS President for four years after BBS founder, Dale Patton's ten year stint). After 8-10 years on private farms (moving to "Big Jim's Farm" in 2002), the festival outgrew its location and found its permanent home at Oregon Ridge Park in 2003, selected for its natural beauty and proximity to the light rail. As the event expanded beyond blues to include bluegrass, roots, funk, and jam bands, it was officially renamed from "Hot August Blues" to the "Hot August Music Festival in 2014. The BBS brought many blues acts to Hot August Blues over the years.
