Planning for the school year? Maryland's interpreter licensing law changed how interpreters are credentialed — and it's easier to plan for than it sounds.

Here's the simple version: licensing protects the quality of access people get. If your organization works with interpreters, the best move is building licensing checks into your normal planning — not scrambling later.
Gateway has spent the past year working directly with the state and Maryland businesses to help answer exactly these questions.

A few things worth knowing:
→ Licensing exists to protect quality of access, not to create red tape.
→ The right interpreter match still matters more than simply ""having someone licensed.""
→ Deaf autonomy means choice — licensing should expand good options, not narrow them to whoever's available.

Calling all teachers! 📣

The National Deaf Center just shared a great back-to-school resource roundup — 5 free tools to help support deaf students with self-advocacy, testing accommodations, and planning for life after high school.
A stat worth sitting with: roughly 64,000 deaf youth in the U.S. are currently neither enrolled in school nor working. That gap isn't about ability — it's about whether access and planning happened early enough.

1926: A small gathering place for people who were hard of hearing.

2026: A statewide organization serving 8,255 individuals and businesses — with over 30,000 interpreting hours, a K–8 school, and services spanning audiology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, ASL education, and community programs.

A lot has changed in 100 years. One thing hasn't: our belief that everyone deserves to be understood.

Most people don't know that hearing loss and cognitive decline are connected — until we tell them.

In Gateway's FY2025 hearing health education sessions, 98% of older adults said the connection between the two was brand new information.

That's not a small thing. Early intervention in hearing health can make a meaningful difference in cognitive outcomes — but only if people know to ask.
