Words From Within Poetry Podcast - SLYC project

Words From Within Poetry Podcast - SLYC project Words From Within features families who come together to share their stories through performance poetry. The History of SLYC:
In 2015, St.

Their tales and poetry are full of struggle and pain, the triumph of everyday survival, and the strength of family bonds. The Goal:
Our Poetry Podcast Fundraiser will fund SLYC programming and to continue the work of growing a center of community driven opportunity, innovation, and engagement - allowing the dreams of the community to expand into the fullness of their purpose. In late 2019 SLYC (Sa

int Luke’s Youth Center) was awarded a Heritage Fund grant through Preservation Maryland to explore empowering new uses for both the Carey Street and Carrollton Avenue properties. Encore Sustainable Architects is in the process of completing this proposal. The Podcast:
Four families from the Westside of Baltimore workshopping with four artists, reveal and sculpt poetic stories of survival, triumph, and enduring love. This podcast is an opportunity for 4 of the families in our community to share their stories, experience art workshops with Gayle Danley and her team, build community, and generate wealth - a primary need in our community. Luke’s Youth Center (SLYC) formed out of the community programming that had been taking place at St. Luke’s Church, Baltimore for decades. Working in collaboration with the local Elementary/Middle School, SLYC developed an arts and literacy integrated summer camp to meet the needs of children in the area. As authentic relationships of love and support developed among the youth, their families, the community, partner churches, and parishioners throughout the Diocese, SLYC began hosting weekly community dinners in 2016. Until Covid-19, these dinners brought people together every Wednesday to break bread and share in the joys of fellowship. In January of 2017, SLYC AfterSchool began when the need to provide a safe, loving environment after school became apparent. With a focus on social emotional learning and leadership, children ages 7 to 17 came to St. Luke’s each day for a community meeting, followed by healthy snacks, homework support, and fun. When SLYC became an independent nonprofit in August 2019, several SLYC Kids formed a youth advisory board. In order for all programming to remain free to participants, SLYC families developed a cooperative model in which they began donating their time, talent, or treasure each month. One of our SLYC fathers was hired to support efforts to keep the property in safe condition for programming to continue. A SLYC mother was hired to manage administrative tasks. And, a grandmother was hired to keep on top of the kids, checking with teachers and supervising homework. We are a community that crosses geographic, economic, religious, racial, and all other boundaries. Our mission of empowering community through the strength of our youth has effectively empowered all members of our beloved community, lifted them up, and created more opportunities for them to thrive. It’s tough to find the words that will effectively express the significance of this beautiful seed that has been planted in the basement of much loved but run-down Episcopal church in West Baltimore. The Vision:
SLYC envisions a Mission Center in West Baltimore, grown from the foundation of the neighborhood’s current residents and community - building on the abundant assets that already exist in order to address the needs. This project will help lift existing residents into the middle class rather than having these families pushed out of their neighborhood by encroaching gentrification. We will partner with new programs and businesses that can use the church space to train, employ, educate, and give valuable opportunities to the people in the community, expanding the capabilities and life purpose of the residents. Please join us in our vision! Please click the donate button to give whatever you can towards this beloved, grass- roots endeavor that has already touched the hearts of so many.

On June 15th, the last day of school, SLYC's Moms On A Mission, will be hosting an event to celebrate all of our children’s missed birthdays, graduations, and other milestones. We are looking for donations of caps and gowns, birthday cakes, outdoor games, a photo booth, food, snacks, drinks, corsages, boutonnieres, balloons, and/or anything else to make the day special for children in our community.
Please visit www.BmoreSLYC.org, email myself at [email protected], or call 410-645-0403 if you are able to assist in anyway!!

SLYC started Moms On a Mission (M.O.M.s) during the pandemic. Each month, mothers, grandmothers and mother-figures of children in West Baltimore collaborate to address issues that affect their children, families, and community. This program gives those with the greatest expertise in issues affecting the community the financial, organizational, and administrative support required to implement effective and enduring solutions.

So far M.O.M.s have distributed 60+ care packages, taken a field trip of over 70 children and their parents to the movies, hosted a community cookout, and organized a women’s retreat.
