Ballet After Dark is an incredible non-profit org in Baltimore equipping survivors of sexual trauma with innovative ways to heal their traumas through somatic interventions, trauma-informed care, dance therapy and other holistic methods to encourage survivors of various levels of violence to heal their bodies using movement. I've met founder Tyde-Courtney Edwards, and she is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Ballet After Dark (BAD) helps survivors reprocess, rebuild and reclaim their lives following sexual and domestic trauma. Their goal is to create a community of survivors. Survivors that participate in our cohorts receive trauma-informed dance classes, mental health therapy, financial literacy workshops, self-defense workshops and advocacy training. Truly an incredible mission.

Please Support Ballet After Dark by sharing this post, donating to Ballet After Dark, and attending their Take Back The Night; the inaugural cocktail fundraiser in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

General admission for this standing room event will feature 2 drink tickets for variety of cocktails, ciders, wines and teas. Guests will also have several small plate options. VIP guests will receive 4 drink tickets and a gift bag.

Q***r Black Artists made history.
Willi Ninja is a Q***r Black Artist you should know.

Nicknamed The Godfather of Vogue, Willi Ninja was a crucial presence in the ballroom scene. If you’ve seen Paris is Burning, you may be familiar with the illustrious dancer, choreographer and icon, Willi Ninja. Willi once described ballroom as the most effective tool to alleviate violence. He reeled in inspiration from the worlds of fashion and music to plant the base for the increasingly revered dance style. Much was in Willi’s grasp, as he released his house-infused track “Hot” and gave riveting performances in two of Janet Jackson’s music videos, “Alright” and “Escapade.” From Jackson to Madonna, Willi Ninja’s liberating dance style influenced countless entertainers. The world is better for having Q***r Black Artists like Willi Ninja.

The Black Arts Movement was an African American-led art movement in 1960s and 1970s which sparked political activism and the use of speech throughout every African-American community. Often credited as the Second Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement created space for new cultural institutions, conveyed a message of pride in the Black Experience, and made way for unprecedented progress in Social Justice and the Civil Rights Movement.

Artwork: Kehinde Wiley, known for his highly naturalistic paintings of Black people, frequently referencing the work of Old Master paintings.
