MALVEC is a coalition designed to address the gaps in COVID-19 vaccinations across the Latinx community in Maryland and the DMV Metro area.

It will leverage resources and create messaging to inspire more Latinx individuals to get vaccinated.

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Mu***os), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration.

A blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture, the holiday is celebrated each year from October 31-November 2. While October 31 is Halloween, November 1-2 is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead. According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults can do the same on November 2.

This is an excellent opportunity for Local Health Departments across Maryland to advance health equity for Latinos. During this session, local health departments will:
1. Increase local health department capacity to build trust between agencies, service providers, and the Latino community�
2. Increase knowledge of community engagement strategies developed during COVID-19 to address health equity.�

These Maryland Latinas are empowering others to follow their lead:

As the Latino community grows in Maryland, women leaders from the community are rising to positions of power, organizing change and making a path for the next generation of leaders.
The Latino population in Maryland grew from 8% to 12% in a decade, or to some 744,000 in the 2020 Census, with the largest communities in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
During Hispanic Heritage Month — which runs from mid-September to mid-October and celebrates the historic Independence of the Spanish republics of the Americas and the contributions of Hispanics in the United States — Maryland Matters is profiling three Latina leaders in the state.

Gabriela Lemus founded Maryland Latinos Unidos in 2020, and led the Mid-Atlantic Latinx Vaccine Equity Coalition. Gabriela currently serves Maryland as an appointee to the Health Equity Policy Committee and other boards and commissions.

"MALVEC" HAS EVOLVED TO LHEA
In Dec 2022 the Mid-Atlantic Latinx Vaccine Equity Coalition (MALVEC) evolved naturally to The Latino Health Equity Alliance (LHEA) which is a group of like-minded Latino leaders who seek to ensure that Health Equity in the state of Maryland not only considers our voices, but also provides leadership and guidance.
We promote equitable social, economic, and environmental conditions to achieve optimal health, mental health, and well-being for all, with a focus on Latino communities across the state of Maryland.
Maryland Latinos Unidos (MLU) is a member of the alliance.

Al vacunarte estás generando anticuerpos que protegerán 🛡tu organismo en caso que contraigas el virus del COVID-19. ¿Qué tanto les ha afectado la salud mental a la Generación Z y Generación Alfa? Según un estudio de la Asociación Estadounidense de Psicología, a Generación Z, población que nació entre 1995-2010, se le conoce por ser una de las más propensas a reportar problemas de salud mental, viéndose aún más perjudicadas durante la pandemia de Covid-19 donde se informaron tasas más altas de ansiedad, depresión y angustia. 😖

Ahora con la Generación Alfa, población que nació a partir del 2010 (nativos de la era digital), también son susceptibles a la salud mental tanto por su uso excesivo a los dispositivos electrónicos que traen repercusiones en su salud física y mental, como por crecer bajo el confinamiento obligatorio por la crisis sanitaria Covid 19, limitando así su fase de desarrollo social para su crecimiento personal. 😥

La salud mental es una gran necesidad hoy en día, es importante acudir a un profesional para buscar establecer una vida saludable física y mentalmente 🤝❤️‍🩹
