Public art shouldn’t be an afterthought. It should be part of the plan.

Beyond beautifying a space, public art can create opportunities for artists, strengthen cultural connections, and influence how people experience the built environment.

At Nosreme, initiatives like ArtWorks in Progress explore how temporary public art can activate development sites, support local artists, and connect new development with the communities around it.

As Baltimore continues to evolve, artists have an important role to play in shaping the city’s future.

We can’t help but wonder: what becomes possible when artists have a seat at the planning table?

Baltimore is strange.

Where else can you watch people pedal 15-mile human-powered art contraptions from Canton Waterfront straight into the mud at Patterson Park?

This is the most Baltimorist thing that has ever existed. It’s exactly the type of raw, unpolished, brilliant public art we want to see highlighted on a global scale, at the same time, we almost want to keep it a secret because it’s so delightfully quirky that only we get it.

Throwing it back to 2023: our Rock, Paper, Scissors art exhibition at Unity Hall—the Part 2 follow-up to our I'm Feeling Crabby community celebration, curated by Arthur Fitzhugh.

Going viral on Instagram shouldn’t be the ONLY way Baltimore artists get global reach.

That’s why I stepped away from my full-time job as an architect to take global. Right now, I’m in Rotterdam building partnerships, securing resources, and establishing a direct international bridge for our creative community.

New York and Philly aren't the only East Coast cities that deserve global platforms. It's time for the world to know Baltimore's creative talent.

Taking the leap is scary, but Baltimore’s creative future is worth it. 🎨✈️

Nosreme was born out of MICA’s MPS in Business of Art & Design program, where our executive director, Ariana, was a student. We went back for the reception of Making America Again: So Strong, So Brave, So True.

The exhibition brings together Ford/Philip Morris Foundation Fellows for Artists of Color with artists who came before and after them. The fellowship helped 200 artists of color earn MFAs, and the show includes work by Dawoud Bey, Sanford Biggers, Joyce J. Scott, Jerrell Gibbs, and Amy Sherald.

It’s on view at MICA’s Riggs Gallery through September 29. Catch it before it closes.

For , art is a way of carrying stories forward.

Rooted in Southern history and the experiences that have shaped him, Christopher “Kolpeace” Johnson’s work reflects the people, places, and stories he has witnessed, creating work that connects what we carry from the past with what we leave for the future.

KOLPEACE is one of two artists participating in Nosreme’s Baltimore–Rotterdam International Artist Exchange. Through this experience, artists will step outside what’s familiar to immerse themselves in a new environment, learn from its people and culture, and contribute their own creative perspectives to the space. 🎨🖌️

This exchange is made possible by community support. As a community builder, you can help make space for artists to travel, create, and contribute across communities while investing in the future of Baltimore’s creative culture.
