The Northeast District would like to take a moment to acknowledge the historical significance and importance of this day, Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that over 250,000 African Americans who were previously enslaved were now free, marking the official end of slavery in the United States, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
