Over the years, several regional camps, nature centers, and outdoor educators have asked how Lure of the Wild approaches outdoor programming during periods of poor air quality.

We're sharing our Air Quality Policy in case it's helpful to other outdoor programs and to our camp families. It explains how we use the Air Quality Index (AQI) to guide decisions about camp operations, activity levels, indoor alternatives, and, in rare cases, cancellations.

While poor air quality is relatively uncommon in Maryland, this approach reflects decades of outdoor education experience, including operating programs during California wildfire seasons.

Because wildfire smoke can travel hundreds or even thousands of miles, air quality can change quickly as weather patterns shift. We continue monitoring conditions throughout the day and adjust our program as needed.

Counselor Cookie sat in on today's end-of-day staff circle.

She didn't have much to say. Mostly just listened. Accepted a few ear scratches. Contributed exactly zero action items.

But she seemed to enjoy the camaraderie, and we appreciated her emotional support and unwavering commitment to workplace morale.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Would hire again.

Good news: we aren't scaling skyscrapers. Our campers, however, are regularly taking curiosity to new heights.

We're big believers in free play, muddy shoes, big questions, and the kind of adventures that turn the world into a classroom.

🌿✨ When the power of wonder beats the fear of uncertainty, the world becomes a classroom.

Camp may be all sunshine, mud, and adventure, but even nature people like a little air conditioning now and then.

With camp closed on Friday in recognition of Independence Day, we traded creeks and critters for popcorn, candy, comfy seats, and a matinee of Toy Story 5 together. We even ran into one of our camp families, who had exactly the same idea! (Thanks for taking the photo, Cleo!)

One of the things we value most is balance. We spend our summers helping kids slow down, play outside, and connect with each other, and it's just as important that we take time to do the same as a team.

A few hours in the cool air, a good movie, and plenty of laughs together. Then back to the woods on Monday, refreshed and ready for more adventures. 🍿❤️💙🌳

On a hot July day, there are few things better than the shade of a big tree, the laughter of family and friends, and the simple freedom to spend time outdoors with the people we love.

We're grateful for the parks, forests, and public spaces that make these moments possible. When cared for, they give children places to explore, families places to gather, and communities places to simply be together and renew themselves.

This weekend, we hope you find a patch of shade, a cool breeze, and a little time to spend with the people who matter most to you.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at Lure of the Wild. ❤️🤍💙🌳

Lifelong fascination doesn't just happen. It starts somewhere.
Today, it started with a turtle, a few brave kids, their counselor, and the freedom to wonder.

Weekly Site Director Check-In ☀️🌧️🌈
Today we held our first Site Director meeting of the season, taking time to review health and safety, share observations from the week, support one another, and start planning for the week ahead.

One of the best parts of growing is having a team that learns together. Each site has its own unique challenges, successes, and surprises, and these conversations help us bring the best ideas from one location to another.

A few action items came out of today's meeting, including plans for a do-over of our Ice Cream Social for the many families who were rained out last time (and missed an incredible double rainbow 🌈🌈).

We're grateful for a team that cares deeply about children, supports one another, and is always looking for ways to improve.

Here's to another week of muddy boots, curious minds, and meaningful outdoor adventures.

The birds are up early and getting ready for the first day of camp in Catonsville!

This is a small sampling of who was up with the sun this morning. Need a stepping stone to get your kiddo outside this summer? Try the Merlin app by Cornell Lab of Ornithology! It identifies birds by sound and helps train your ears to pick up on what's happening right out your back door, and anywhere in the world!
