Our research request of the week comes from New York! 🗽

Professor Hillary Miller was searching for images of the Greenwich Mews Theatre, an off-Broadway theater in downtown Manhattan. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the images that she wanted, but our research wasn’t in vain!

We learned of a different Greenwich Theater, one located right here in Baltimore City and established by Landres Chilton. And this homegrown theatre was specifically recognized for facilitating in*******al theatre productions in town with an integrated cast of lead actors.

That’s the beauty of the archives – you may not always find what you’re looking for, but you’ll leave having learned something new.

Have you ever felt inspired to follow in the footsteps of your adventurous ancestors?

Our researcher for this week’s request is doing just that. Filmmaker Carla Brown of “Everyone But Two" is tracing her grandparents’ RV routes through the US’s 48 contiguous states.

In the archives, we uncovered information about Carla’s grandmother’s (Frances) involvement with the American Friends Service Committee’s Friends Peace Caravan — in*******al groups of pacifists who traveled raising awareness of the racial and economic injustices that permeated the United States.

We enjoy assisting with genealogical research, and appreciate the opportunity to learn more about our researcher’s loved ones and their places in history!

How many inches of snow do you think we’ll get this weekend?

Extending a heartfelt thank you to our colleagues, partners, volunteers, and donors to our 2025 Mrs. Santa program! This year’s event was a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community comes together with love, care, and intention.

We collected 400 toys, 40 bicycles, and 105 school uniforms for students at Furman L. Templeton Elementary School! How amazing is that?! While these stats are significant, the memories that were made are what mattered most.

Seeing parents share their gratitude for our organization and our many donors, and watching the kids have a blast with their new gifts was more than worth it.

Mrs. Santa is a legacy program of AFRO News and Afro Charities, founded in the mid 1950s, and this year reaffirmed its importance. The need in our community is real, and the impact is undeniable when we show up together.

Special shout out to the Steppin’ Out Bunch, Kappa Silhouettes, Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, Omega Psi Phi, the Philomathians, the Mechanic Foundation, Next Phaze Café, the Baltimore Alpha Wives, and countless others for their donations and support this year. Without you, this event would not have been as impactful as it was.

Thank you for helping us carry this tradition forward.

We’ll explore The Remarkable Life of Reed Peggram—the true story of a brilliant young Black scholar who, on the eve of World War II, chose love, freedom, and dignity over a segregated America. From Paris salons and artistic circles to wartime danger and daring escape, Peggram’s life reveals a rarely told story of q***r Black resilience in a world set against him.

ReReading the News brings stories from the AFRO News Archives into conversation with historians, writers, and community voices—connecting the past to the present.

Afro Charities was first established on November 15, 1963 in Baltimore, MD to administer the AFRO’s charitable programs. The orginal board consisted of John H. Murphy, III, President; James D. Williams; Moses J. Newson; Cliff W. Mackay; and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Phillips, secretary and treasurer (as seen above).

While our logo has changed, our staffing has grown, and our mission has expanded, our passion for community and history has only deepened. Thank you for your support and care for our organization. Here’s to many more years of preserving history and cultivating a lasting impact in Baltimore and beyond.

To celebrate, please consider making a tax-deductible donation at afrocharities.org/donate (find the link in our bio!).
