FYI - Do you know that students and adults have the right to participate in both the district and school budget priority process? If you had the decision making power and/or can support the budget priority?

“You all (the district) can help support me and the future I want to build by just providing more programs and opportunities for students to express our voice, and that gives us a sense of leadership. Programs that allow students to reach out and look at problems in schools and create solutions to those problems would be very helpful. For example, the youth ambassadors program as I mentioned earlier, is a great way to allow students to be a part of improving our classes and schools. It is always great to get different perspectives on things, especially a student’s perspective.” -

We’re starting a new social media initiative called the Citizen Spotlight where we feature our youth and what they are doing to help make Baltimore a better place. Our first citizen spotlight is Kamaya Taylor.

Kamaya Taylor is an 8th grader and one of two youth ambassadors at Fort Worthington Elementary Middle School. She has spoken on a student panel that was put together by City Schools partnering with the Bill and Melinda gates foundation to talk about the various things that are being done to support and improve our district. She also recently got accepted to Baltimore Polytechnic Institute for high school where she has been wanting to go for years because in the future, she would like to be a biomedical engineer. She is also very passionate about the Black Lives Matter movement. Kamaya freely voices her opinion on the subject and has written poems about the matter in school. Additionally, Kamaya Taylor was on her school's debate team at one point. She was on the team for two years and adored it because she got to advocate her voice. Her and her teammates have won many trophies and medals for expressing their opinions about different matters. Kamaya is all about making change but when she is not doing that she is crafting, learning to play guitar, doing a bit of singing, schoolwork, and co-producing the morning announcements for her school. Kamaya is also planning to work this upcoming summer with the Youthworks program. She is very interested in working with the JHSJP (The Johns Hopkins Summer Jobs Program). Now Kamaya Taylor, along with lots of other students, are working with the youth ambassadors' program where they are aiming at changing her school and other city schools for the better.

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) is launching a new youth initiative, Rep Your Rec, which will start with the Youth Council and expand to include volunteer and employment opportunities. Teens involved in Rep Your Rec’s Youth Council will help BCRP make informed agency-wide decisions about areas affecting youth. This includes recreation center programming and preserving and activating green spaces within Baltimore City. The Youth Council application will open January 4, 2021 and will be accepted through February 5.

The link to apply will be in the comments.
