“What I know from six years of leading Troop 163 is that these girls invigorate scouting rather than weaken it. They have modeled, for the boys and girls in neighboring troops, what it looks like to earn your rank without shortcuts.

These young women will grow up to be doctors, engineers, leaders, colleagues. The boys in scouting will grow up alongside them, and some of those boys will one day work with them and for them. Teaching our children to struggle and achieve together is not a social experiment. It means we are preparing them for the real world.”

Our pack just completed a 6 mile round trip bike ride from Sparks Nature Center, with a turnaround with Taharka at Monkton Hotel and Cafe.

Great turnout. Weather held so that it was rain free.

2 more pack-organized events this summer: swimming meet up July 26 and Rocks State Park/Kilgore Falls hike and splash around Aug 2. DM for more info if not part of our pack.

Last pic is our leaders meeting for our annual planning meeting. Lots of fun and belt loops ahead this program year.

Dr. Laura Riley, formerly a veterinarian working with large mammals in private practice and at the Maryland Zoo, joined us for a Pack-wide meeting this Sunday. She currently trains service animals and was accompanied by her black Labrador Retriever, Crow, who recently graduated training as her service dog.

Dr. Riley shared insights from her experience as a veterinarian and discussed the important roles service animals play in our society. She also provided guidance on proper etiquette when interacting with service animals, presented in a way that was accessible and engaging for the Cubs. She also brought along some seashell fossils, a snake skin, and a horse skull!

⚓️ USS Torsk Overnight ⚓️

Good times were had by most during our overnight adventure aboard the submarine! While a few folks reported less-than-perfect sleep (turns out sleeping on a sub isn’t exactly the Ritz 😄), that was about the only complaint.

The kids did an outstanding job—they listened to the crew, followed directions, and showed great respect for the space and the experience. Several crew members even mentioned that our group did better than they expected, which says a lot about our Scouts and families.

The ship itself was fascinating to explore, and even the quirky “facilities” situation (having to go to another ship for the restroom!) became part of the adventure. The bunks were tight but surprisingly comfortable, though there were a few nighttime bumps from kids discovering the limits of submarine headroom—and at least one adventurous sleeper rolled out of a bunk!

Special thanks to Rebecca for leading things with the girls in the officers’ quarters—she was absolutely indispensable. And big appreciation to John and Adam for helping guide the whole voyage. 🚢⚓️

Pinewood Derby Build Day rocked with scroll saws and bandsaws galore. Kids designed and painted their cars with skill and patience. Amazingly no bandages were needed. Leader assistancess made their dreams come true. Don't miss Race Day Feb 1st!

Our goofy Cubs got into the holiday spirit by warbling winter tunes and performing ridiculously funny skits. Troop 5 joined the party to show off their fire starting skills, hand out s’mores and hot chocolate, and lead the crowd in a hilarious program.
