✨ The Future Forward: Youth, AI & the New Digital Horizon Summit brought together visionary leaders, innovators, and educators who opened doors for the next generation.

From conversations on AI, quantum technology, and civic innovation, to students sharing their dreams for a more connected and equitable future — this summit reminded us what happens when we invite youth not just to the table, but to lead it.

Our speakers didn’t just inspire; they ignited the belief that technology and community can advance together when young minds are welcomed, heard, and empowered.

Every baby deserves a healthy start—and yet, our tiniest and most vulnerable face persistent threats. Launching the Healthy Babies grant has compelled us to take a deep dive into the realities: prenatal and early-life exposure to poor air quality, contaminated water, lack of timely prenatal care and the countless invisible hazards in the environments of our youngest.

🔍 Some of the facts:
The U.S. infant mortality rate stood at 5.61 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023 (cited by CDC).
For Hispanic/Latino infants, the rate in 2023 was 5.03 per 1,000 live births, slightly below the overall rate but masking deeper disparities within sub-groups. Office of Minority Health

Among the Hispanic/Latino sub-groups, infants of Puerto Rican mothers had a rate as high as 6.43 per 1,000 live births. Office of Minority Health
Environmental exposures make a difference: a comprehensive U.S. study found that a one-standard-deviation increase in ozone exposure during pregnancy was associated with a 6.4% higher incidence of low birth weight and 12.8% higher incidence of very pre-term birth.

Another study found that prenatal exposure to air pollution (first and second trimesters) was linked with lower cognitive development scores in children at ages 1 and 3. (BioMed Central)

We at Maryland Latinos Unidos believe that giving babies a healthy start means addressing — head on — the environmental and structural risks affecting our communities. Latino families often face heightened exposure due to housing, occupational, linguistic and access barriers. These are not abstract issues—they are urgent.

Todo bebé merece un comienzo saludable—y, sin embargo, nuestros recién nacidos más vulnerables enfrentan amenazas persistentes. El lanzamiento del programa de subvención Healthy Babies nos ha llevado a una reflexión profunda acerca de las realidades: exposición prenatal y temprana a mala calidad del aire, agua contaminada, falta de atención prenatal oportuna y múltiples peligros invisibles en los entornos de nuestros niños más pequeños.

🌬 Cómo saber si la calidad del aire en casa es buena 👀

1. Revisa lo que ves Mínimo polvo en superficies y rejillas de ventilación. 👃 No hay moho visible en paredes, techos o alrededor de ventanas. Aire limpio: sin neblina, humo ni partículas flotando en la luz del sol.

2. Comprueba lo que hueles Aire fresco y neutro. Sin olores a humedad (podría significar moho), sin olores químicos, sin humo persistente. 😮 ‍ 💨

3. Comprueba cómo te sientes Los miembros de la familia respiran fácilmente en espacios interiores. 💧 Sin tos frecuente, picazón en los ojos, secreción nasal o dolores de cabeza inexplicables. Los bebés y los niños pequeños duermen bien, sin congestión ni sibilancias.

4. Verifique los niveles de humedad Humedad interior ideal = 30–50%. ¿Demasiado seco? Hemorragia nasal, garganta seca, descargas estáticas. ¿Demasiada humedad? Condensación en las ventanas, olor a humedad o moho. 📟

5. Verifique con herramientas Los monitores de calidad del aire miden partículas (PM2.5), CO2 y sustancias químicas (VOC). Los detectores de monóxido de carbono son esenciales para la seguridad. Incluso un simple medidor de humedad puede ayudar a controlar el confort interior.
