Wow, What a year 2023 was for the B&CSC! We successfully completed our Baltimore National Heritage Area grant to mitigate water intrusion into the hull of the 1940 M/V CHARLES D. GAITHER police patrol/fireboat.

This project would not have happened if not for the efforts of Walt Mathers. Walt was an incredible individual - historian,1st & 2nd person interpreter, artist, bookbinder, and the The Fire Museum of Maryland's 19th century Santa Claus for many years. His knowledge spanned from pre-Colonial to modern US and international history. He is particularly known for maritime heritage; Civil War signal corps, living historian as both a soldier and civilian, and the bass drummer in drum & fife corps units; 18th century penmanship, of which he delighted in instructing students of all ages; German-American heritage; and many other areas - a true Renaissance Man.

We lost Walt, our rudder and dreamer of what can be. He did not live to see the GAITHER shine at Baltimore's National Maritime Day on May 21, 2023. The Armed Forces Day & National Maritime Day Wreath was designed to honor Walt for his important service to Baltimore's maritime heritage.

Bern Deichmann, a resident of Philadelphia, died on the 22nd day of June five years ago.

Bern had travelled down to the head of Chesapeake Bay to be with us in the Port of Baltimore back in 2009 for the 50th launch anniversary of the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship, NS SAVANNAH and said a few words during the ceremony.

SAVANNAH was christened and went down the ways on July 21st. 1959. America wanted this sleek new passenger-cargo vessel constructed to show the world that nuclear-power could and would be used for peaceful means.

The seagoing nuclear reactor would become part of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's around-the-world Atoms for Peace initiative and could make three and one-half trips around the world before refueling was required.

As Bern tells it, he was a young engineer helping to design the steam turbines that were to be placed aboard SAVANNAH. He had asked his senior co-workers if he too could get invited to the ship's launching across the Delaware at Camden NJ. and was informed that only the senior staff would be going to this rather prestigious gathering. "Maybe next time Son."

One day, Bern sat down and wrote a nice letter to President Eisenhower's wife Mamie. Mamie would have the honors of smashing the bottle across the ship's stem just prior to it slipping into the Delaware river.

Vice President Nixon's wife, Pat, had officiated at the keel laying ceremony a year prior to the launch on National Maritime Day, May 22nd, 1958.

Bern's letter said how thrilled he had been to work on the engine's power components that were being readied within the ships engine room. In closing, Bern lamented that he would not be present at the ceremony since he was only a junior engineer with Delaval.

The next thing Bern's co-workers knew, Bern was sitting next to them at the launch ceremony. America's First Lady had sent Herr Deichmann a personal invitation to attend the christening too.

It happened that way... going west.

Dwight M. Messimer, author of: The Merchant U-Boat: Adventures of the DEUTSCHLAND, 1916-1918, died at his Northern California home in Roseville, on Thursday, the 24th of February, 2022 of heart failure, according to his wife of 63 years. Dwight was 84 years old.

Dwight was raised in California. As a soldier in the United States Army and a fluent speaker of German, he was stationed in Berlin where he met and married his future wife, Renate, a German national, during 1959.

As an invited speaker, Dwight attended the Great War Society, Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, the Military Operations Research Society, the National Archives at Washington, DC, the Naval Postgraduate School and Naval War Collage and the Submarine Forces School.

Unable to attend the 2016 centennial observance and reception for the U-DEUTSCHLAND exhibit, held at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Maryland, Dwight, however, did send small tokens of his affection and appreciation to many of his fellow researcher in the form of replica hat badges, similar to those worn by U-DEUTSCHLAND’S crew of 1916.

In recent years, being an avid sailor, Dwight and Renate would spend much time sailing the waters of Northern California.

Survived by his wife Renate Irmgard Charlotte (80), a son Dale Randall, two grandchildren and one great grandchild, Dwight had requested that there be no memorial or celebration of life services.

His wish was to be cremated and his ashes spread upon the waters he and Renate frequently sailed.

In lieu of flowers, Renate asks that cards of sympathy and remembrance be directed to: 1909 Edinburgh, Roseville, Calif. 95661 or email her at: [email protected]

She was also the 1st submersible to ever make a solo crossing of the Atlantic ocean. Dwight and his colleagues conducted extensive research into the history of this submersible.

Not well known today, the Voyage of the DEUTSCHLAND was a world-wide sensation at the time it occurred and interest in it was revived approaching the voyage centennial of 1916 and beyond.

The cap badge stands for: German Ocean Navigation, Deutsche Ozean-Reederei or (DOR).
