Micah 1 – The Lord Leaves His Temple

2 Hear, you peoples, all of you;
pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it,
and let the Lord God be a witness against you,
the Lord from his holy temple.
3 For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place,
and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.
4 And the mountains will melt under him,
and the valleys will split open,
like wax before the fire,
like waters poured down a steep place.

- Micah 1:2-4



The book of Micah is focused on judgement against the kingdom of Judah for a couple of reasons. First, they – like their cousins to the North in Israel – had begun worshiping Gods other that the Lord. They worshipped Baal, following after this false god for the promise of rains and harvests to enrich themselves and secure their futures. Second (with more detail in subsequent chapters), the rich had been exploiting the poor using bribes and corrupt judges to swindle the poor out of their homes and possessions.



Micah likens their trading their soul for profits to a pr******te: Both trade the most intimate parts of themselves for money.



7 All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces,
all her wages shall be burned with fire,
and all her idols I will lay waste,
for from the fee of a pr******te she gathered them,
and to the fee of a pr******te they shall return.

- Micah 1:7



Because of this, God is leaving His holy temple to bring judgement against Judah – to cleanse her of the idolatry and bring her back to Himself and back under His protection.



This is not just a random story about ancient people – it is a reminder to us that God left His dwelling place in heaven to come to Earth to bring us back to relationship with Him. Even though our hearts wandered from Him, chasing idols of all sorts, He never stops loving us and bringing us back to Him.

Obadiah – Israel’s Restoration

18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire,

and the house of Joseph a flame,

and the house of Esau stubble;

they shall burn them and consume them,

and there shall be no survivor for the house of Esau,

for the Lord has spoken.

- Obadiah v18

The book of Obadiah is a book of only one chapter prophesying judgement against the

nation of Edom for not only being passive as its neighbor, Israel, was being destroyed,

but for actively plundering cities of Judah alongside the oppressors and capturing

refugees fleeing Judah to sell them into slavery.

The judgement against the Edomites (the descendants of Esau) is severe and stark.

We should never underestimate the judgement of God against those that oppose Him.

He does not negotiate with sin; He does not dismiss it…God’s justice against sin must
be satisfied.

Thank God that our sin was paid for by Christ in our place!!

20 The exiles of this host of the people of Israel

shall possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath,

and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad

shall possess the cities of the Negeb.

21 Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion

to rule Mount Esau,

and the kingdom shall be the Lord

- Obadiah V20-21

As with many other minor prophets we’ve read, Obadiah wraps up his prophecy of

judgement with a promise for Israel and Judah – they shall return to the land that was

promised them. This prophecy was fulfilled as the Babylonian empire was replaced by

the Persian empire and the Babylonian exiles returned to Israel to reclaim their inheritance.

God’s justice is sure…but so are His promises…and so is His goodness to His people!

Obadiah – Pride Goeth Before the Fall

1 The vision of Obadiah.

Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom:

We have heard a report from the Lord,

and a messenger has been sent among the nations:

“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”

2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations;

you shall be utterly despised.

3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,

you who live in the clefts of the rock,

in your lofty dwelling,

who say in your heart,

“Who will bring me down to the ground?”

4 Though you soar aloft like the eagle,

though your nest is set among the stars,

from there I will bring you down,

declares the Lord.

- Obadiah v1-4 (ESV)

The book of Obadiah is a book, only one chapter long, prophesying judgement against
the nation of Edom for not only being passive as its neighbor, Israel, was being destroyed, but because Edom actively came and plundered Jerusalem alongside the oppressors from Babylon.

Obadiah opens his prophecy warning Edom about its pride in its security and position
amongst the nations of the area. They believed they were “untouchable” in their
mountain cities nestled in the cliffs of the area. They also believed that they were
superior to Judah and Israel based on being the descendants of Esau, the firstborn son of Isaac and Rebecca back in Genesis and, in turn, the rightful recipients of Abraham’s promise. To add insult to injury, Edom had been subject to King David and they were still bitter.

Pride, arrogance, and bitterness had brought the nation of Edom to cheer the destruction of Judah and given them “permission” to raid the cities of Judah and even capture refugees from Judah and sell them into slavery.

Obadiah prophesied that this pride, arrogance, and bitterness would result in Edom
being repaid – in kind – for their treatment of Judah by being treated the same way by
their neighbors. A sound warning for all people to avoid the pride, arrogance, and bitterness of Edom.
