Command: Be Perfect
Read: Matthew 5:48
Memorize: 1 Peter 1:22
Character Quality vs Character Flaw: Sincerity vs Hypocrisy
Operational Definition: Eagerness to do what is right with transparent motives
Greek Concordance: Perfect = Teleios - Complete, Spiritually Mature, Moral Character
Society says: “We were born to be real, not perfect.”
Jesus says: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matt. 5:48)
Jesus never called us to pretend or perform.
But He also never called us to stay broken.
Biblical “perfect” doesn’t mean flawless.
It means whole, mature, undivided.
Being real admits where we are.
Following Jesus means being transformed from there.
Grace doesn’t lower the standard.
Grace raises us into it.
We aren’t called to self-expression.
We’re called to Christ-formation.
What Jesus Meant by “Perfect”
The word Jesus used for perfect is teleios.
Teleios means:
• Whole, not divided
• Mature, not stagnant
• Complete in purpose
• Fully aligned with God
Jesus wasn’t demanding sinless performance.
He was calling us to undivided love and growing maturity.
“Be perfect” is not condemnation.
It’s an invitation to wholeness through grace.
“Obeying the truth purifies, cleanses us of our inner selves (our biggest enemy) helping us to purely love others because of the transformation of The Word, Christ in us.” - Gerrie Pemberton
