As a first-timer at a Woodlots Gathering, I learned *so* many things. We were standing in a wetland ecosystem without even realizing it! As we navigated the privately-owned forest on a neighbor’s property in Montgomery, the land beneath our feet was muddy and very uneven. Because of the time of year, our Woodlots leader Nancy Patch was able to spot the signs of a seepage forest. A Northern Hardwood Seepage Forest is a wetland ecosystem that forms where groundwater flows to the surface on gently sloping terrain. Importantly, Northern Hardwood Seepage Forests absorb and slow runoff from heavy rainstorms, helping moderate the potential for extreme flooding downstream (helping protect from the damaging effects of flooding events like we’ve seen in Vermont in recent years).

As our Woodlots group gathered for a walk around a forested property, we spied a friend down in the valley. While we explored the property on foot and learned about the recent forest management work our neighbors have undertaken, we spotted some additional signs that our black bear friends were among us in the forest! Luckily there was no sign of this guy at the potluck.
