Happy Father’s Day from ADAKC 💙

Today, we honor the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures whose love, strength, and care have made a lasting difference in the lives of their families.

For many families affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia, Father’s Day can bring a mix of gratitude, reflection, joy, and tenderness. Whether you are celebrating with your loved one, remembering someone special, or caring for a father figure through a difficult season, please know you are not alone.

ADAKC is here to support Kern County families with compassion, resources, and care through every chapter of the dementia journey.

Wishing you a meaningful and peaceful Father’s Day. 💙

ADAKC has a clear goal for this next chapter: to reach more than 1,500 Kern County families by June 2027. 💙

That means expanding our presence into more communities, sustaining Spanish-language programming, growing support groups, strengthening partnerships, and helping more caregivers find the resources they need.

This is a bold goal, but it reflects the need we see every day.

Alzheimer’s and dementia affect families across Kern County — and ADAKC is committed to meeting that need with care, education, and community-based support.

A special support opportunity for ADAKC caregivers 💙

Thanks to the generosity of a longtime ADAKC volunteer and certified massage therapist, caregivers who attend ADAKC support groups may now be eligible to receive a free 10–15 minute mini massage in their home or office.

This complimentary caregiver-only massage may include hands, arms, neck, and shoulders, and is intended to offer a small moment of rest and relief for those caring for a loved one.

To participate, caregivers must attend an ADAKC support group and meet the following requirements:

💙 Non-smoking environment
💙 Pets must be put away in a separate room
💙 Massage is for the caregiver only
💙 Therapist does not provide respite care or work with patients/family members
💙 24-hour cancellation notice is required

Appointments may be available outside of Bakersfield, including weekends and after hours.

To learn more or schedule, please call Tilly at 661-665-8871 or email [email protected].

Caregivers give so much. We are grateful to offer a small way to help them feel cared for, too. 💙

Dementia support does not stop with families.

It also includes the professionals and community members who interact with individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia every day. 💙

ADAKC’s next chapter includes professional dementia training for hospitals, first responders, employers, banks, faith organizations, and other community partners.

These trainings are built from decades of hands-on dementia-care experience and are designed to help Kern County become more informed, compassionate, and prepared.

Together, we can build a more dementia-friendly community.

Thanks to the generous support of Mercy and Memorial Hospitals in Bakersfield through the CommonSpirit Health Community Health Improvement Grants program, ADAKC was able to partner with Dignity Health, Talley Farms, and Mom’s Meals to support 1,224 family caregivers across Kern County.

Through this effort, caregivers received bilingual education in English and Spanish on important topics including Alzheimer’s & Dementia 101, Healthy Habits for the Brain, Preventing Caregiver Burnout, the Importance of Self-Care, and Alzheimer’s Communication Techniques.

In addition to education and support, caregivers also received direct nourishment assistance, including:
• 126 tailored meals from Mom’s Meals
• 51 grocery gift cards
• 100 fresh food boxes from Talley Farms

We are deeply grateful to Mercy and Memorial Hospitals for their generosity and continued investment in families navigating the Alzheimer’s journey right here in our community.

Together, we are helping caregivers feel informed, supported, and cared for. 💙

When a family is facing Alzheimer’s or dementia, information matters. So does connection. 💙

As part of ADAKC’s countywide model, we are expanding caregiver education and support through workshops, digital resources, new diagnosis tools, Spanish-language resources, and regional and virtual support groups.

Our goal is to make support more accessible for families throughout Kern County, including rural communities and families who may not have been able to access services tied to one location.

No caregiver should feel alone in this journey.

Communication can be one of the hardest parts of caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

When a loved one is confused, repeating themselves, or remembering something differently, it can be natural to want to correct them, but often, the most helpful response is to meet them where they are.

A few gentle communication reminders:

💙 Speak calmly and slowly
💙 Use simple, reassuring words
💙 Avoid arguing or trying to “prove” what’s true
💙 Validate the feeling behind what they’re saying
💙 Redirect with kindness when needed

The goal isn’t to win the conversation. The goal is to help your loved one feel safe, heard, and supported.

ADAKC is here with practical guidance, resources, and support for caregivers throughout Kern County.
