🎻🎶 Our first concert of the 2026–27 season is almost here!

Join the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra for an exciting afternoon of music as our talented young musicians take the stage under the direction of Dr. Leo Sakomoto!

From the grand, triumphant sounds of Wagner to the haunting, playful mystery of Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre,” this program is filled with drama, imagination, and beautiful orchestral storytelling. Experience the brilliant sounds of the trombone with featured soloist Marcus Jephson, followed by the colorful melodies and lively rhythms of Bizet’s “L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2.”

Look who we spotted at KCMEA’s Fall Conference! 👀🎶

A few familiar BYSO faces stopped for a photo, but they were far from the only ones there! Pictured from left to right are Teresa Rizo, Steve Miniard, Amanda Sproul, Amy McGuire, and Mike Stone.

From Board members and advisors to the school instrumental music teachers who work with our musicians throughout the year, so many members of the BYSO community were learning, leading, and connecting throughout the day.

🎉Please join us in welcoming Anthonio Reyes as the new Orchestra Manager of the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra!🪊

Anthonio Reyes is a local trombonist and elementary music teacher who has played the trombone since he was 10 years old. A proud product of Panama-Buena Vista Union School District, he later studied under Mrs. Amanda Sproul in junior high, whose encouragement and mentorship helped inspire him to become a music educator.

Anthonio earned a Bachelor of Music in Teacher Preparation from California State University, Bakersfield, and is currently completing his credential while teaching elementary music in the Fruitvale School District.

Outside the classroom, he performs throughout Bakersfield, with a particular love for salsa music, and is excited to help the next generation of musicians discover the same joy that inspired his own musical journey.

🎻 Open Auditions for the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra!

The BYSO is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 concert season!

At BYSO, students grow as musicians and individuals through high-quality orchestral training while building confidence, forming lasting friendships, and developing creativity, discipline, teamwork, and a lifelong love of music.

BYSO performs three concerts each season and offers opportunities such as sectional coaching, private lesson scholarships, and college scholarship opportunities.

🎼 Open to all sections: Strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion

📅 Application deadline: Friday, September 4, 2026
🎻 Auditions: Saturday, September 12, 2026
📍 Location: CSUB Music Building

We are incredibly proud of each of you and grateful to have been part of your musical and personal journey. As you begin this exciting next chapter, we look forward to seeing all that you accomplish and the positive difference you will make wherever your path leads.

Did you know Rebecca Brooks served as Concertmaster of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra for 49 years, inspiring generations of young musicians as both a performer and a dedicated violin teacher? 💙

For many years, Mrs. Brooks also marked the bowings for the BYSO string section and coached one of the BYSO string quartets. She continues to serve on the BYSO Board.

One of the sweetest moments following the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra’s thirty-third season finale was seeing Mrs. Brooks reunited with a few of her students, along with both current and former BYSO members.

For generations of young musicians, Mrs. Brooks has been more than an educator. She has been a mentor, encourager, and friend, forming lasting bonds with her students and their families.

The impact of a great teacher is carried forward beyond a lifetime by the generations they inspire.

Please join us in showing some love for Mrs. Brooks! 🎻💙
