The La Vida Nueva fam had a blast at the Kern BHRS Recovery Fair this morning. We played games, won raffle prizes, enjoyed delicious food, shouted until we lost our voices, and shared in the joy of recovery with one another. We heard some beautiful stories of resilience, hope, and renewal, participated in the recovery circle, and laughed a LOT. We also had the opportunity to host the community art project again this year and loved seeing everyone’s additions to the recovery constellations and hearing about what lights your way. Thank you to Kern BHRS, our amazing colleagues at all the other agencies, and most importantly to every single person in recovery who showed up today. To start your journey today or if you’re interested in learning more about Livin’ La Vida Nueva, call 661-634-9877 or walk intou our open access clinic any time we’re open 🩵🧡💛

La Vida Nueva’s lake day was a success! We had a lakeside guided meditation, took our group fishing license for a whirl, made delicious hot dogs and brats, played games, and spent time in fellowship with one another. We had a blast today with our favorite people in the world 🩵🧡💛

Thank you to counselor Danny for the idea for a lake day, figuring out that we could get a free group license, and teaching everyone how to fish. Thank you to all the staff who came out to volunteer and have a good time. Thank you to all the clients who helped set up, take down, cook, and have fun at this recovery activity. Thank you to all the families who showed up for their loved ones in recovery. And huge thank you to our agency’s founder, Janet Flores, who started us out as a small organization called the Kern County Chicano Commission back in 1984. Thank you for all of your dedication to the recovery community, for starting the spark that led to all of the amazing work we get to do today, and for coming to the lake to share some inspiration with our clients. It was such a treat for clients to get to meet the person whose idea and hard work started all of this, and to get to share Janet’s legacy with her in such a special way today.

We’ve been dying to share this with everyone and the time has finally come. This amazing song was written, performed, and recorded by one of our talented clients with his family. Let’s just say we didn’t budget nearly enough for tissues, because this song hits us right in the feels! We don’t do what we do for the recognition, but it sure is beautiful to see our work from the perspective of someone who has been through our program. We 🧡 our clients so much, and we’re so glad they can feel it.

We had so much fun hiking at the Windwolves Preserve today! We started on the El Camino Viejo bike path and then popped over onto our favorite trail, the San Emigdio Canyon Trail. We saw some really cool wildlife like these scarab beetles (they’re called “Teddy Bears”!!!) and a tiny rattlesnake. The California poppies were blooming, the sun was out, and the breeze felt wonderful. So grateful for everyone who came out to enjoy nature with us! And big thank you to Carolina for being an awesome guide!!!! 🌼☀️

It’s Throwback Thursday!! Take a look at this photo of staff back in the 1980s working our booth at a local Cinco de Mayo event. We still participate in community events all over the county to this day. This is a vital way to engage with our community and reach individuals who need our services. La Vida Nueva has a long history of service to the Kern County community and we are proud to carry on the legacy of our founders!

Today, staff and client volunteers came out on a Saturday to help clean up some graffiti we found on our property. There’s no evidence that the graffiti was left by someone in our program, as we are in a high traffic area that accessible to the public. Despite this, we believe it is important for us to take accountability for our space and be of service, even if we aren’t positive that it’s our mess to clean up.

The space we work in is a reflection of us, and we are a reflection of the recovery community at large. La Vida Nueva is very well known in our community. Our name, logo, and reputation are highly recognizable and well-regarded by others. For that reason, we always seek to serve as ambassadors for the recovery community. Because we recover so loudly and proudly, it’s important that we use our existence as a shining example of the fact that people do recover, that people with substance use disorders are worthy of dignity and respect, and that the stigma many carry against our community is based in prejudice and not facts.

We recover loudly, so that others may stop dying silently.

Many thanks to our clients and staff who came out to be of service, enjoy tacos, and serve as a good example to others.

We had a festive time in peer group today making holiday ornaments and discussing “Holiday Traditions: What We Keep and What We Change in Recovery” 🎄

Clients got to choose what to write on their ornament and were able to take their creations home for themselves or to give as gifts to loved ones!

Our staff got out on the ice with clients and their families tonight at the Donate to Skate event at Valley Children’s Ice Center. We brought lots of delicious food donations and had a great time. Here’s two of our supervisors having a blast skating at the event!
