Fred Zulfa Memorial Scholarship Honoring the memory of a son, brother, friend & classmate by supporting the college dreams of West High School graduates. Thank you!

Fred Zulfa graduated from WHS in 1982, where he was a key member of the state championship speech and debate team. He was awarded a debate team scholarship at USC, where he graduated in 1986. Fred was funny and brilliant and compassionate, and although we lost him in 1992, he is still thought of every single day. In honor of Fred's love of movies and music, scholarship applicants are asked to write about favorite song lyrics and a movie character that inspires them. We have given out a scholarship to a WHS senior in 2013 and 2014, and are hopeful that we can increase both the amount of the scholarship and/or the number of recipients in years to come. Making a donation is a great way to both remember our classmate, Fred, and support our alma mater. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund, you can either write a check or pay via PayPal. If you would like to write a check, please send an email to Andrea Zander Norman at [email protected], and she will provide you with all the necessary information. If you would like to pay via PayPal, please designate [email protected] as the recipient of your funds.

CATCHING UP WITH ANDRES ACEVEDO RAMIREZ, CLASS OF 2025! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›

Andres is currently enrolled at CSUB as a Pre-Nursing major, and in the process of applying to the CSUB Nursing Program for the 2027-28 academic year. During his first year of college, Andres took Chemistry, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology, all of which he found both challenging and incredibly interesting. CATCHING UP WITH PRECIOSA RAMOS, Class of 2024! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š

Preciosaโ€™s last year at UC Davis has been full of growth, curiosity, and new experiences. She finished an exciting chemistry course, exploring kinetics, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and transition with metal compounds, along with hands-on lab work in analytical methods and synthesis. Preciosa also decided to pursue a minor, which led her to Chicana Studies courses that have expanded her perspective through a Chicana feminist lens, especially on marginalization and US foreign policy. These classes have been deeply meaningful to her. Outside of academics, Preciosa has been building community through a womenโ€™s fellowship group, and spending free time writing poetry and exploring downtown Davis with friends.

Paris is entering her senior year at UC Berkeley, where she has been busy with student organizations, internships, and a work study job. Last year, she had the honor of being a Social Sciences Research Pathways mentee, working with a graduate student mentor in the Political Science department on their research into how NGO restrictions are reshaping human rights norms. During her last semester, she also took on a new role as a financial aid caseworker in the ASUC Student Advocateโ€™s office. She loved being able to help students in a hands-on way, getting them the resources they need.
