The Atheist Society of Kern began as a small Sunday "get-together" for local non-believers. Originally, our purpose was simple; provide fellowship and support to members of our local community. Over time, our numbers grew and we collectively acknowledged the value this support network provided. Soon, we began to discuss how we could work together to better our community, so we decided to make thin
gs more "official". Today, the ASK operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization, charged with doing good works in our community and supporting our diverse communities (atheist, rationalist, secular humanist, agnostic, skeptic, theist and non-theist) by providing opportunities for socializing and friendship among these groups. One of our highest priorities is standing with people of faith by actively defending their religious freedoms, and encouraging the first amendment principle of state-church separation. The ASK encourages the pursuit of knowledge, meaning, and responsible ethical codes without reference to supernatural forces, by actively championing reason and natural science as the most reliable method for understanding the universe, and improving the human condition.
