We are local 501(c)3 non-profit dog rescue located out of Bakersfield, California. Help us make a difference by, adopting, fostering, donating.

Here at Hand Me Down Dog Rescue, we are driven by a single goal; to do our part in making the world a better place for pets and their people. Our focus is on working breeds (border collies, cattle dogs, australian shepherds, etc) but we do not discriminate. We focus on pulling from shelters, take dogs off the streets, abandoned in orchards, and dogs in serious condition. We try not to take owner s

urrenders, but find ways to keep pets and owners together. We want to help other rescues with their goals as well, since we are all in this together and working as a community is the most beneficial choice we can make for the animals.

Meet Outlaw ❤️

Don’t let his name fool you, he’s actually the sweetest boy ever! He was pulled from the county shelter after he had no interest and was wasting away in the shelter.

He is a very flashy pretty Border Collie with unique markings. He is around 1.5-2 years old. He has not met a stranger, very sweet with people. Around 45lbs but his fluffy coat makes him look a bit bigger than that.

Outlaw isn’t your typical high drive Border Collie. He is not constantly needing a job or to be exercised. He is happy following you around and laying at your feet. However, he is still a Border Collie so walks, runs, hikes, rounds of fetch would still be ideal for him.

He is dog friendly, he has been around all types but we’ve noticed another very dominant male that picks on him would not be an ideal match for him.

He is crate trained and very good in it. Non destructive, quiet and clean. Outlaw loves fetch, is food motivated and is very smart. Which will make him a breeze to train. He does lack leash skills and can be a puller, so he needs work in that department. He’s does know a few commands like sit and shake.

He’s a really cool dog and will make someone a very awesome buddy! Especially someone who wants a chiller type border collie.

Hi supporters!
I am currently helping FOUR yes four dogs from another rescue try to find their forever home. They will be with me for a month and I really want to network them and get them seen and adopted during that time. Good news is one has been adopted! And now there is 3 remaining and they are all really good dogs!

We will start with Cletus. ❤️
He is the best boy. Probably a Malinois x GSD mix. 1-2 years old and a lover! Not a mean bone in his body. He gets along well with dogs and loves to play. He’s not your typical Mal or GSD. I don’t think he knows what he is suppose to be. He’s not high strung, no high drive, extremely outgoing and social and no anxiety has been noted.

He is still a young high (ish) energy dog, so would appreciate a good outlet but is not a dog that will require 20 miles a day to stay stable.

He’s really cool and I love his demeanor.
Ask Cari. He tried to maul her with kisses. 😂

Obviously still not a couch potato but if someone wanted a Mal or GSD but without all the baggage….. this is your guy.

A huge plus? He’s gorgeous. He has it all. The personality and good looks.

He is completely vetted, crate trained (can be whiny if he gets FOMO), knows a few basic commands and ready for his forever family.

The rescue has had him since he was 8 weeks old. Yeah, that’s crazy to me too. Even crazier that he is not a complete nut job for growing up that way.

I really want do find him his forever home. He’s only temporarily with me and I only have so much time. 🙏

10 week old, Red Heeler puppy, male.
He is snuggly, affectionate, ornery, loyal and everything you love in a heeler.

He gets along with other dogs very well, great in a crate, sleeps through the night, rarely has potty accidents and is really such a a lovely puppy.

He’s going to make someone an awesome friend.
He’s very adored around here but it’s time for him to start his very own life adventures!

This day came sooner than I thought it would 😭❤️

Phoenix went into a foster to adopt with some amazing people!

Doberman experienced ✔️
Lives in SoCal ✔️
Works at a vet ✔️
Super kind and caring ✔️✔️✔️✔️❤️

This is the best case scenario adopters for her and not sure how we got so lucky but I am very thankful. They already have plans to get her heart checked and get her on the best foods and meds/supplements.

I am so happy for Pheeny and hope this is final and most happiest chapter of her life. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Happy Friday!

Phoenix was sent so much love this last week! We can’t thank you enough!

When I said this girly was going to be so loved and supported, it was a tad bit of wishful thinking but you guys came through once again! More than I could ever imagine!

She went from nothing. Just a post on Facebook with a plea for help. Eating trash in the road…..
To having an army behind her. 💪
We feel all the love and this is a THANK YOU! post.

Sirius was adopted yesterday!!! 🎉❤️

We found Sirius running down towards the freeway in the middle of nowhere. He was starving and exhausted. I don’t know how long he was out there but it was during all the bad rain we were having and he was just a baby.

Fast forward to now, he is happy healthy and now adopted! He is such a special puppy with the best personality. I’m so glad he found a person of his own. 🖤🖤🖤

Hey Doc!

Go ahead and throw everything you got back there into a to-go bag, including the kitchen sink for me… thanks!!!

Miss girl has made major improvement in the 7 days she’s been here, but the vet and I want to make sure she stays on the right path of healing so they prescribed her 2 months worth of meds to give her the best chance. ❤️‍🩹

I was going to call her Ivy, but the name Phoenix keeps calling to me and many people have suggested it.

Plus…. Today is the first day that I am able to see her eyes. The swelling has gone down tremendously and revealed these two beautiful ember fire like eyes, but also hold so much kindness. So….

Phoenix it is. 🐦‍🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️

Good morning 💕
A little update on our mange girl. ❤️

She might not look much better on the outside yet…. but she is feeling a ton better on the inside!

She is much more lively, spunky, walking better, and now screaming/barking in her crate 😂 I’ll take that as a good sign!

She’s eating like a champ and even had a solid p**p this morning! It’s going to be a long road to recovery but we’re heading in the right direction.

We want to give a huge shoutout to those who have shared, donated, and sent well wishes thus far. Our tiny rescue could not do this without you and we appreciate it and can feel the support from you guys. ❤️

Girly got her first medicated bath a few days ago. She is feeling a little bit better but it’s going to be a long recovery….. ❤️‍🩹

Any name suggestions?? She had a name previously…. But kinda just want to dump her old life in the trash and start new and fresh!

Merry Christmas from the Hand Me Downs! 🎄❤️

Sirius black is officially ready for adoption! This is going to be a tough one to let go, he is such a fan favorite around here!

If you don’t remember, I found him running towards the freeway in the middle of nowhere and weeks ago. He was smelly, skinny, and exhausted. And we had those big rain storms, so he was out trying to survive in those conditions.

He is now happy, healthy and so special. I am assuming he is all German Shepherd and if not full, then a very high percentage. He is your typical is your typical loyal GSD. Wants to be with you, love you, and be your best friend.
And lucky enough, he doesn’t seem to exhibit the natural anxieties this breed can have.

He’s a pretty well rounded pup. Of course he’s still a puppy, so lots of training and patience still required!

Only the very best home will be considered! Experience with the breed is a plus. ❤️
