Volunteer Opportunities available here: https://signup.com/go/xrLkksd CSU Bakersfield is a public university located in Central California and has a student population of over 9,000 students. The Community Edible Garden idea came about after a study by Dr. Aaron Hegde (Ph.D.) found that 40% of our student on campus were food insecure at least once within the past year. We define food insecurity as
not knowing when or where your next meal is going to be due to lack of financial resources. After gaining more insight from local food bank organizers, we realized that food insecurity was also affecting our local community. The Community Edible Garden is our attempt to overcome food insecurity within the Bakersfield region. Our edible garden will feature 46 raised bed planters, 117 fruit/nut trees, 6 hydroponics systems, student/ community gathering areas, shed for storing tools/ research materials, a student research area, a relaxation/meditation area, and a welcome center. Our community garden will be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.
