In case you missed it, the State of California has designated May 17 as Bruce Lee Day. May 17, 1959 was the day Lee returned to the USA after being raised in Hong Kong. Interestingly, he was born in the USA to touring Chinese parents and thus had birthright citizenship.

Martial arts icon Bruce Lee, who was born in San Francisco, will become the first Chinese American in California history with an annual namesake day. Gov.

Ceremony for interment of bones discovered in April of 2 Chinese pioneers. Dr Patrick lead the ceremony along with Allen & Norman. Incense, tea, wine, roasted pig, steamed chicken and fruit were offered as well as joss money at the Historic Union Cemetery

The Bakersfield Chinese Women’s Club was honored to present a special scholarship at Liberty High School last month. We thank Provisional Member Elizabeth Leung for representing the BCWC at their awards ceremony.

Hello and good evening, everyone, family, friends, and the graduating class of 2026!

My name is Elizabeth Leung, and I am here to represent the BCWC and as a prior recipient of this scholarship in 2020. Therefore, I am excited and never imagined that I would be on this side of the podium so soon!

The BCWC is a social club celebrating its 80th anniversary this year!

Today, it’s a group of women that graces the community with their presence, mentors young professionals, and hosts annual events for the public to attend!

But what hasn’t changed is that the sole goal of the club has been to raise funds to award deserving high school seniors of Chinese descent who want to pursue higher education!

Now a Liberty High School student is receiving one scholarship of $1,000.

This particular award is special as it is a memorial scholarship named the Dr. Sue Poh Memorial Award after a beloved longtime member of our club. The recipient needed strong academics, diverse extracurriculars, and to have dedicated themselves to serving their community to be selected by the BCWC. Dr. Sue Poh’s family also hoped that the student will be pursuing a career in medicine.

So, the student going to Berkley with an interest in Biomedical Engineering receiving the Dr. Sue Poh Memorial Award is Keen Nguyen!

May you run your chosen path and grasp all of your future with your own hands.

More remains of Chinese who lived in Bakersfield were found and will be interred on Monday at 10 am at Historic Union Cemetery in a traditional ceremony.

Hello and good evening. Family, friends, and the graduating Titans of 2026.

My name is Elizabeth Leung, and I am a provisional member of the BCWC: here to represent, talk about the club, and present the award. I am also a previous recipient of the scholarship 6 years ago, and a fellow alumnus of Frontier High School from 2020. So, I am practically shaking.

The BCWC is a social club celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Today, it is a group of women that will grace the public with its presence, mentors younger professionals, and hosts events for the public to attend.

But what hasn’t changed is that the sole goal of the BCWC is to raise funds to award deserving high school seniors who are pursuing higher education and are of Chinese descent.

This year, $20,000 has been raised by the help of generous donations. 1 student has been selected for their achievements, extracurriculars, and service to their community from Frontier High School who is going to UCSB…
