From the files of the Twin Towers Orphans Fund, a program of the Children's Fund of America:

Andrea suffered from major depressive disorder due to unresolved grief over the death of her father. She had to be hospitalized three times in one year. Her mother turned to TTOF for help because the costs were astronomical and her insurance only covered 50 percent of the billed amount. Overcoming her mental health issues was imperative if Andrea hoped to attend college.

TTOF assisted with Andrea’s mental health bills and contributed to her higher education by releasing funds from her 529 account when she started attending the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Andrea is now 20 years old and doing much better as she studies toward a BA in Fine Arts.

Combating terrorism is a global struggle as is providing mental health care and higher ed support for the children of our fallen heroes in the GWOT. So too is our work with the children of 9/11 that will continue for years as hundreds still have yet to graduate from college. Visit our websites to learn more and help where you can. There are several charities that offer higher education support to the children of 9/11 or our fallen heroes in the war against terrorism. A significant difference between our programs and others is we do not require superior academic scholarship to receive assistance. It is unfair to require students who've lost a parent to be straight "A" students. Besides financial need, we ask only that they meet the standards for admission and continuing good standing at their chosen college or university. Isn't that enough?
