The public is invited to our next History Talk, The Eric Hafenfeld Family: Ranch Life in the Kern River Valley in the Jenkins Pack Station on Wednesday, November 12, at 10 a.m. The presentation by the Eric Hafenfeld family will speak of a fifth-generation cattle ranch in the Kern River Valley. Their grass-fed beef is sold at Whole Foods Markets. Eric, his wife Jaime, and their children Gus, Charlotte, and Ward will present a History Talk about their family’s five generations of Ranch Life in the Kern River Valley. Eric’s great uncle, Thomas Arthur Cannell (1854-1912) was the first family member to immigrate from the Isle of Man to the Kern River Valley in 1867. Arthur returned to his homeland between Ireland and England, married Margaret Ann Joughin (1855-1935), and then settled on the South Fork. Other pioneers from the Isle of Man were Cannell’s brother-in-law, William Daniel Joughin, Sr. (1870-1948), and William Crellin Kissack (1887-1969). Eric Joughin Hafenfeld grew up here in the Kern River Valley and graduated from Kern Valley High School in 1998. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, and Questa Colleges. Then when his dad was injured, Eric returned to work the ranch. Eric’s wife, Jaime, grew up in Glasgow, Montana, and graduated from Montana State University in Missoula with a degree in Business. Helping present the History Talk will be school homework for Gus and Charlotte. The family’s cattle ranching lineage that connects Eric Hafenfeld to Arthur Cannell, for whom Cannell Meadow on the Kern Plateau is named, includes William Daniel Joughin, Sr., and Ethel Christian Joughin (1888-1967); William Daniel Joughin, Jr., “Bill Jr” (1921-1991), and Roberta Jane Fulton Joughin (1928-2015); & Eric’s parents, Bruce Allen Hafenfeld (1947-2021) and Silvia Lynn Joughin Hafenfeld. Five generations later, Eric and his family range their cattle herd from Sherman Pass through the Joughin Cow Camp at Big Meadow to Cannell Meadow and Riverkern; throughout the South Fork Valley; and out into the desert.
