“In order to preserve for the benefit and inspiration of the people a representative segment of the Great Basin of the Western United States possessing outstanding resources and significant geological and scenic values, there is hereby established the Great Basin National Park.” Exactly forty years ago today, with this sentence in the Great Basin National Park Act of 1986, Congress established Great Basin National Park.

Now, we’re working to support and celebrate each element that makes Great Basin National Park so special - its pristine night skies, ancient bristlecone pines, subterranean wonders, and each of the dedicated public servants that protect and share this place.

Today, your donation of any amount not only helps Great Basin National Park Foundation to continue this work, but also automatically enters you for a chance to win a two-night stay at Hidden Canyon Retreat, Lehman Lodge, or the Stargazer Inn in 2027.

We had a wonderful ribbon cutting and all day celebration yesterday for the newly completed Lehman Caves lighting system and the 40th anniversary of Great Basin National Park. A big thank you to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto for making special remarks and cutting our ribbon! And a big thank you to all the speakers who gave presentations in Baker Hall (we will have recordings available soon), to the Eskdale Choir for performing beautiful opening and closing songs, and to all the people (NPS rangers, partners, and volunteers) who made these projects possible.

Did you know that this fall our Science Educator led 206 students on Park field trips in Great Basin National Park? She also shared the Park with 214 students virtually.

Through education programs, youth learn about animal adaptations, Park science and stewardship, and the natural and cultural resources that make Great Basin National Park– Nevada’s own national park–such a special place. Students take their learning beyond the classroom as they explore Park ecosystems, make observations, ask questions, and experience nature and science firsthand.

Do you know a teacher who would like to participate? Bring them our way! No matter where your classroom is located, youth can learn, explore, and connect with Great Basin National Park! Learn more at greatbasinfoundation.org/content/education

GreatBasin40! Things We Love About GBNP - 22. Sunrises and Sunsets

Sunrise or sunset—which do you prefer? 🌅

Few places showcase the beauty of changing light quite like Great Basin National Park. As the sun rises and sets, the Park's mountains, valleys, forests, and desert landscapes are transformed by shifting colors. Peaks that appear gray during the day may glow pink, orange, or gold, while distant mountain ranges fade into layers of blue across the horizon.

There's something special about watching the day begin or end in Great Basin, when the mountains and valleys are bathed in soft, colorful light. Some visitors wake before dawn to watch the mountains come alive with morning light, while others linger into the evening to enjoy the last rays of sunlight before the stars begin to appear.

Where have you seen a sunrise or sunset that took your breath away? ☀️

Great Basin National Park needs people like you to help preserve and protect the pristine dark skies, wide-open habitats, and natural and cultural heritage of this special place.

GreatBasin40! Things We Love About GBNP - 21. Great Basin Mysteries

Did you know one of Great Basin National Park's most intriguing mysteries is a forgotten r***e?

In 2014, archaeologists discovered a Wi******er Model 1873 r***e leaning against a juniper tree in a remote part of the park. The r***e, manufactured more than a century earlier, appeared to have been left behind and never recovered. Less than two years after its discovery, the tree it rested against was consumed by the Strawberry Fire.

Who did the r***e belong to? A rancher, hunter, or traveler passing through the mountains? Why was it left behind? No one knows.

Today, the "Forgotten Wi******er" remains one of Great Basin's most fascinating historical mysteries and a reminder that the landscape still holds stories waiting to be uncovered.

Great Basin National Park needs people like you to help preserve and protect the pristine dark skies, wide-open habitats, and natural and cultural heritage of this special place.
