A Chicago-based developer, is proposing construction of a 19-turbine, industrial wind project to line the top of Short Mountain Ridge for six miles. The proposed turbines are over 600 feet tall and would be the most prominent feature of the entire county. Doing this would require that RESIDENTIAL land in the Short Mountain region of Hardy County be re-zoned. Hardy county has had zoning in place since 1973!
• Impact to Neighborhoods. The MASSIVE turbines will become the most dominant element in the environment, creating considerable light pollution, obliterating night sky viewing opportunities and destroying the forests and habitats that make Hardy County unique and beautiful.
• Noise is the #1 complaint of residents who live near wind turbines. Mechanical and low frequency noise caused by the motion of the massive turbine blades generates a near-constant pulse. The turbines that are proposed can reach 100 dba sound levels!
• Property Values. Those living under or near wind turbines can lose 10% to 40% of their property value. It has been reported that homes up to two miles away from commercial wind development have suffered significant property value losses of 30% and more.
• Health Impact. People living near wind turbines have reported a range of negative health symptoms including headaches and dizziness from the impact of constant low frequency noise and the effect of light strobing from the rotating turbine blades that intersect the lights.
• Wildlife. Short Mountain is home to a wide range of many protected species such as the American Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Turkey Vulture, bats, and whippoorwill. Deer have been known to leave permanently after turbine construction because of the loss of habitat.
• Safety Issues. Wind turbines create an increased danger of ice throw and blade fragmentation as well as increased stray voltage, fire hazards, and increased occurrence of lightning strikes. Wind turbines can fail, catch fire, and collapse.
