Why more sunlight means better wildlife habitat 🌲

A dense forest canopy can block sunlight from reaching the ground, limiting the grasses, forbs, and other vegetation wildlife depend on.

By opening up the canopy through proper forest management, more sunlight can reach the forest floor - creating better food and cover for species like deer, grouse, and turkey while also helping improve the long-term value of the timber.

Lately… WEA scientists have been busy with field studies in properties across Alabama, Georgia and Texas. The goal of this project is to monitor biodiversity across various sites within 9 different categories. Lichens, mosses, fungi, bats, birds, spiders, flying and ground beetles and plants (to name a few!); have all been studied. Check back for updates on the project and more insight 🙌🏻

The 2026 Red-cockaded Woodpecker breeding season has once again started early this year! Group composition surveys throughout this season will help confirm, and track, continued population growth and stability of the species. This monitoring effort is part of a long term project with efforts that began in 2016; with new breeding populations and nesting clusters having successfully expanded on their own in the last few years. The continued success of the project and long term value of reintroduction efforts are exciting and evident 🙌🏻 Check back in for more updates in the coming weeks!

Wiregrass is starting the year strong with projects down in Sebastian, FL! Inventory was taken of over 1,500 trees spread across 20 parks in the city of Sebastian. Various trees were assessed based on their health conditions and whether they were interfering with local infrastructure. The information collected will aide the city in caring for their urban forests through maintenance and proactive measures. Stay tuned for more Wiregrass updates!
