At last night’s quarterly Historical Society dinner, we were taken back to days when Wooly Mammoths and Mastodons roamed Decatur County. Kevin Dowdy shared part of his collection of artifacts, along with the history of the piece and where it was found. The pieces you see in these displays were discovered along or near the Flint River, most right here in Decatur County. Thanks Kevin for sharing your knowledge and incredible finds with us. If you’d like to join the Historical Society and attend these interesting dinner meetings please message us or email [email protected].

Tonight’s Living History Tour at Oak City. Cemetery put the spotlight on five former Bainbridge residents: Orson Smith (portrayed by Richard Britt), “Red” Long (portrayed by Doyle Welch), David Ramsey Simmons Sr. (portrayed by his grandson Ramsay Simmons III), Damon Taylor (portrayed by Bert Hines), and E. G. Elcan (portrayed by Tommie Howell). This was one of the largest tours we’ve had in quite a while. The event is sponsored by the Decatur County Historical Society, with assistance from The City of Bainbridge. It was a great way to help the City of Bainbridge kick off Georgia Cities Week, with special activities each day this week.
