Update on one of our favorite stories from this year's Fine Art collection.

Last week we shared the story of a watercolor of nesting seagulls signed by local artist Grace Shildmyer, who spent years working with the Sidney Art Gallery in Bremerton. While researching her work, one of our volunteers found a three year old post from her granddaughter, Lauren, hoping to track down any of her grandmother's art still out there. So instead of putting the painting up for bid, even though it was getting real interest (a watercolor this size is rare), we reached out and gave it to her.

Lauren sent us photos to share with the community: herself with the painting at home, one of her as a little girl with her grandma, and a wonderful photo of the two of them feeding seagulls together on the waterfront, the same birds she painted in the piece we had! She also made a donation back to Rotary in gratitude.

Her message to us summed it up better than we could:
"Thank you so much for your efforts!! It was so nice to see it in person and the little baby chick is so cute. We have found a good place for it and will cherish it!!!"

This is the part of Fine Art we don't put a price tag on. Thank you, Lauren, for letting us be part of getting a piece of your family's story back where it belongs.

And that's a wrap!

We are so grateful to our volunteers, donors, sponsors, shoppers, neighbors, the teachers, custodians, and staff at Woodward, the City of Bainbridge Island, the Police & Fire Departments, and Bainbridge Prepares for the countless hours, energy, and care they put in to this event.

What happens to the things that don't sell? When the sale ends, 60+ registered nonprofits and other groups come and harvest anything they can use. Next, anything that is in sellable condition is boxed or set aside for our bulk harvester, Goodwill, to collect. We also have a special harvester for clothing that wasn't sellable. After we secure our supplies and the campus, we open for overnight gleaning by the public. What still remains on Sunday is picked up by Bainbridge Disposal, our longtime partner. We are proud to say that every year we send fewer trucks to the landfill.

On Sunday we roll up the protective rugs in the gym, return desks to classrooms, pick up trash over the seven acres, do a metal sweep across the campus, and hope that we left the school better than how we found it. See you in 2027!
