Artist Spotlight: Dan Friday
The other half of our current exhibition, Dan Friday Raya Friday, Dan Friday is a Lummi Nation artist based in the Skagit Valley who has spent the last 30 years creating works in glass.
Drawing inspiration from his Coast Salish heritage, Friday’s work often combines simple forms, powerful imagery, and storytelling. His glass sculptures and totems explore both personal narratives and cultural connections, transforming traditional themes into striking contemporary works.
Over the course of his career, Friday has taught at institutions including Pilchuck Glass School, the University of Washington, Evergreen State College, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. In 2017, he founded Pilchuck’s Native Youth Outreach Program, helping create opportunities for the next generation of Indigenous artists.
Friday’s work has been exhibited internationally, and he has received numerous honors for his artistic contributions. Some may also recognize him from the Netflix series Blown Away.
From Dan Friday: “Living as an artist may not be directly saving the world, but perhaps we are saving ourselves and hopefully, in the process, making the world a better place.”
