Three ways to enjoy Wyalusing State Park in early spring (even if trails are muddy)
Early spring at Wyalusing can be cool, damp, and muddy—and still absolutely worth the trip. Here are three easy ways to enjoy the park before summer crowds arrive:
Soak in the bluff‑top views
The overlooks 500 feet above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers give you stunning scenery without needing to hike long, muddy trails.
Watch migrating birds and eagles
The Mississippi River flyway brings hawks, warblers, and other migrating birds through the area, and early spring is prime time for viewing—especially from the bluffs and open viewpoints.
Explore the river backwaters by canoe or kayak
On calmer days, the marked canoe trail through the river sloughs lets you see waterfowl, aquatic plants, and backwater wildlife up close, with less mud than a typical hike.
Dress in layers, bring boots you don’t mind getting dirty, and pack binoculars if you have them. Early spring is one of the park’s quietest—and most dramatic—times to visit.
