The Bad Axe Rotary Club has recently completed a project involving music, education and youth in Malawi, a landlocked country in southeast Africa Bad Axe Rotary Club Utilized local funds as well as grant funds from Rotary International. Club members partnered with colleagues in Malawi. Keyboards, amplifiers, microphones, music instruction books, other supplies and music teachers were funded for the community surrounding St. Anthony's Parish in Lilonwe, Malawi.
The beneficiaries were the 200+ youth and adults that directly participated in the project as well as others in the larger community who came together to learn, have conversations and improve the well-being of the community. Musical abilities improved as social issues were addressed and the bonds in the community strengthened as people came together.
Specifically, this project increased knowledge and skills in music among parish choir members and non-members. Individuals were trained in keyboard and musical proficiencies, directly improving skill levels. This knowledge improved the lives of those trained as they can now utilize the skills for income generation. The social well-being of many, especially vulnerable individuals and families, also improved through positive community relations and greater social acceptance with music.
Dr. Nancy Lubeski, President-Elect, of the Bad Axe Rotary was overseeing this project. Due to her previous experience of conducting Fulbright research in Malawi, she was able to easily connect colleagues in rural Malawi to our Bad Axe Rotary Club.
Here is our live ZOOM call at The Bad Axe Rotary meeting with our friends in Malawi. We were able to see the Keyboards and music books that the grant provided to this community!
