Yesterday November 25th marked the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Enough is enough.
Here’s the brutal truth:
- Globally, 1 in 3 women face intimate partner violence or sexual violence in their lifetime. That’s about 733 million people; many silenced by fear. The numbers are staggering, and progress toward SDG 5? "OFF TRACK".
- Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest GBV rates globally.
In Cameroon:
- 43.66% of women experience GBV; emotional (28%), physical (33.8%), sexual (10.3%).
- 97.1% of victims are female, with 17.9% under 18. Bearing the brunt and stigma from r**e, assault, forced marriages, economic abuse and the list goes on....
- In the North West, South West, and Far North regions, 2,386 incidents were reported in 2023 alone (that’s just the tip). Poverty, inequality and conflict fuels this terrible beast that is ravaging our society. In Cameroon, displacement amplifies risk, with 45.5% of GBV survivors being IDPs.
Enough with the empty talks and promises. We urge all state and non state actors to:
- Legislate boldly
- Strengthen laws,
- Fund shelters,
- Punish perpetrators.
- Empower women and girls through land rights, cash aid, and education.
- Support survivors with healthcare and counseling,
- End digital violence abuse.
- Fund solutions and
- Protect girls.
Survivors deserve justice, not silence.
UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.
