On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. This day became known as Juneteenth, marking the end of slavery in the United States for many who had not yet received word of their freedom.
Juneteenth is a time to honor the strength, perseverance, and contributions of African Americans throughout our nation’s history. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of freedom and the responsibility we all share in preserving it for future generations.
As veterans, we recognize that freedom is never guaranteed—it is protected through service, sacrifice, and a commitment to the ideals upon which our nation was founded.
Today, VFW Post 40 joins communities across the country in commemorating this important chapter in American history and celebrating the enduring pursuit of liberty and justice for all.
Happy Juneteenth from Pat Tillman Memorial VFW Post 40.
