Dogs Need Therapy too!

Bernie goes to the vet next week to get x-rays done to check for any signs of hip dysplasia. I've done informal checking and he has no popping or sticking in the joint. Let's just hope that the tests come out perfect and Bernie can indeed be a support dog.

I met with Bernie and Joe today and Bernie is coming along nicely. He calmed within moments of my arrival. He has already learned his basic commands so sit, stay, come, wait, etc. are there and just need to be reinforced. Bernie also ventured into public in his vest today as well...PetSmart, but we've got to start somewhere.

The parsley in these treats makes them a secret breath freshener for your pooch; substitute dried mint for half of the parsley, if you like. Don't hesitate to adjust the size of the treats to accommodate very small or very large dogs, baking them a few minutes less or a few minutes more, as needed....

This is a recipe for Chicken "soup" for dogs with sensitive tummies.

Ingredients:
40% Protein
Chicken Breasts and Chicken Thighs without bones
Cottage Cheese
40% vegetables such as yellow or grey squash, zucchini, carrots, and celery (measured before cooking)
20% Brown Rice (measured after cooking)
Olive Oil

Directions:
Boil a combination of Chicken Breasts and Chicken Thighs without bones in water until thoroughly cooked. Remove the chicken but reserve the broth. Shred or mince the chicken. Set aside.
Add Brown Rice to the chicken broth plus enough water to complete rice recipe (plus 1 cup extra water to prevent sticking and make recipe a bit “soupy”). Cook for 30 minutes. (Note: ONLY USE BROWN RICE – other rice may cause constipation and add to tummy troubles.) Add Cottage Cheese and continue to cook for 15 more minutes or until rice is completely cooked.
Sauté a large amount of shredded vegetables in a small amount of olive oil for about 15 minutes. Use vegetables such as yellow or grey squash, zucchini, carrots, and celery. (NOTE: Do not use onion, garlic, or peppers…these will make the dogs SICK, SICK, SICK!) Pour veggies and juices into “soup”.
Once everything is cooked, mix together. The proportions should be roughly 40% veggies (measured before being cooked), 40% protein- including the cottage cheese, and 20% grain. A “whole” dog food should ideally be 50% veggie, 40% protein, and 10% grain, but dogs with tummy troubles usually need some extra fiber and brown rice helps balance out their system.
