“When I left this morning, I promised him I would come back. Tonight, he is safe at Lucky Dawg.”
You never truly know what is happening in your own neighborhood. Just a mile from our rescue, this dog had reportedly spent the last year outside on a thick, four-foot chain.
This morning, a concerned citizen reached out, and I went to assess the situation. I found him surrounded by f***s and dead mice. His chain was so heavy and short that he couldn’t even get fully inside his makeshift doghouse. There was no water in his bowl—just mud.
But when I approached with treats, his tail began to wag. He never growled. He gently took each treat and looked up at me with his huge head and those big eyes. This boy probably outweighed me, but all I saw was a gentle giant hoping for a little kindness.
Neighbors told me they sometimes brought him food and water because, they said, he could go days without either from his owner. They also told me he loves the neighborhood children, who stop by to pet him.
Please don’t use this post to blame or shame the neighbors for not reaching out sooner. People may not recognize neglect or know how to report it, and some may be afraid to speak up. Several were trying to help him in the ways they knew how. Today, someone’s call changed his life.
His owner was reportedly at work, so I asked that he be told Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue would return. Before I left, I made this dog a promise: I would be back.
This evening, a volunteer, an officer from our local police department, and I returned. We spoke with his owner, who agreed to surrender him to us without incident.
We cut the chain and loaded him into the car. On the short ride to the rescue, he gave us sloppy kisses. ❤️
Tonight, he ran in our field. He ate a big dinner. And now he is sleeping inside, with blankets, balls, and a bright future ahead of him.
Thank you to the concerned citizen who spoke up, the neighbors who offered kindness, and the volunteer and officer who helped bring him to safety.
For the first time in a long time, his world is bigger than four feet of chain.
Sleep well, sweet boy. We kept our promise.
