🔬🧂 Science in action at the Pennsylvania State Capitol!

A big thank-you to our friends at Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring - ALLARM, who joined us for yesterday's Overseasoned: Road Salt Pollution Awareness event and helped test stream water samples for salt pollution.

These samples are part of a larger community science effort to understand how road salt affects our waterways — not just in winter, but year-round.

We're grateful for partners like ALLARM who help turn community participation into valuable water quality data!

📺 Thank you to WPMT FOX43 for joining us at the Pennsylvania State Capitol today and helping shine a spotlight on a problem that doesn't end when winter does: road salt pollution.

Salt applied to roads in winter can persist in groundwater and continue entering streams throughout the year, threatening freshwater ecosystems.

🧂 Road salt pollution in October? You bet.

Today, we brought the science of road salt pollution to the Pennsylvania State Capitol for Overseasoned: Road Salt Pollution Awareness.

Together with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and ALLARM, we highlighted an often-overlooked problem: Road salt doesn't simply disappear when winter ends. Chloride can persist in groundwater and streams long after the snow melts, affecting freshwater ecosystems year-round.

Through community science, stream monitoring, and conversations about solutions, we're helping turn data into greater awareness and action.

Looking for a fun, free outdoor activity for kids tomorrow? 🎣

Join the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Stroud Water Research Center at White Clay Creek Preserve in Landenberg, PA, for a hands-on Junior Ranger Angler day designed to help young people become conservation-minded stewards and anglers.

📅 Sunday, October 18
🕚 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
📍 White Clay Creek Preserve, Landenberg, PA
Use for navigation: 405 Sharpless Road, Landenberg, PA 19350

Kids can:
🎣Learn to cast a fishing rod and “catch” a fish
✏️Work through activities in the "Let's Go Fishing" booklet from the National Park Service, including a White Clay Creek insert
🤝Borrow fishing equipment and try fishing in the stream with an adult chaperone
⭐Earn a Junior Ranger Angler badge after completing most of the activities

Anyone under 16 may participate in the fishing activity without a permit. Anyone 16 or older who wants to fish must purchase a Pennsylvania fishing license online before participating: https://ow.ly/VIm950ZXJxf

Important arrival note: From the Preserve Office, head east on Sharpless Road about one-third of a mile to White Clay Creek Preserve Lot 2. Look for tents and tables where the activities begin. Access is best from the west, north, or south via South Bank Road or London Tract Road, as Sharpless Road is damaged and scheduled for repair next week.

🧂 Road salt pollution doesn't end when winter does.

Salt used on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots can linger in our waterways year-round. But how much is in your local stream? You can find out!

Join Stroud Water Research Center and our community partners for the Fall Salt-Pollution Stream Snapshot, October 15–18.

Collect a water sample from a local stream and bring it to a participating drop-off location, where our partners will test it for salt pollution. Your sample will help build a clearer picture of water quality across our region.

Tonight's the night!

What happens when a dam comes down — and a river runs free again?

This fall, we’re exploring that question from the Klamath River to waterways here in Pennsylvania.

Tomorrow, October 13: Join experts from American Rivers for our free Joan and Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture, When Dams Come Down: Reconnecting Rivers Across America. Hear stories of dam removal and river restoration from the Klamath to Pennsylvania.

November 5: The conversation continues at The Water’s Edge, where we’ll honor Amy Bowers Cordalis, one of the Indigenous leaders behind the historic effort to remove four dams from the Klamath River, with the 2026 Stroud Award for Freshwater Excellence.

Two evenings. One big question: What's possible when rivers are reconnected?

Do you have some free time on Saturday morning to plant trees around the Little Lehigh creek (upstream from the Fish Hatchery)? Then join us at 9:00am on Saturday, October 17 as we plant around 50 trees in the riparian buffer zone around the creek. This effort will stabilize the creek bank and provided needed shade for the ecosystem around the creek.
