In the Costa Rican rainforest near the Orosí Volcano, a team of six scientists from Stroud Water Research Center and The University of Alabama spent weeks in warm tropical streams, tracking how nitrogen moves through the food web — from microbes and algae to , , and .

They released a tiny amount of a harmless nitrogen tracer and collected nearly 1,700 samples to uncover who’s eating what — and what keeps these biodiverse streams thriving.

Tropical streams are still relatively understudied, but they can help us recognize early signs of stress as climate change, pollution, and habitat loss grow.

🌿School's Almost Out!⛺

Stroud Center Science Camp runs July 20–24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for rising 3rd through 6th graders, and we have a few pairs of boots left to fill!
Campers will investigate White Clay Creek, do freshwater science experiments, and make nature crafts. There is still time to register, but don't wait!

✨Our camp is led by professional educators who will educate, entertain, and maybe even amaze your children! ✨
