Happy December 1st! Time sure does fly when you’re having fun. We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As for us, we’re still flying high on all of the good vibes from the Surfin’ Turkey 5K!
2025 has had its challenges, but with the holidays upon us, we want to take the opportunity to raise spirits and end the year on a positive note. 'Tis the season, right?! The Hatteras Village Christmas Parade will be taking place on Saturday, December 13th, and 🚨spoiler alert🚨, the theme of our float this year is going to be “Celebrating the 12 Lights of Hope”.
The 12 Lights of Hope represent organizations whose unwavering efforts help keep Hatteras Island safe, supported, and strong. They lift us up and light our way, simple as that. Whether nonprofit or government, volunteer-run or professionally staffed, each plays a vital role. Their missions may differ, but what unites them is that they help the island weather every storm. For that, we want to take a minute to shine a light on them, because we are so grateful for their service and dedication to this community. So for the next 12 days leading up to the parade, we will reveal a light (in no particular order). On parade day, we will pick a winner and do something special for them in the days following. Follow along and join us in turning this space into one of celebration and thankfulness this holiday season!
On the heels of the Surfin’ Turkey 5K, we thought we would start with the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund (HIYEF)!
HIYEF is a community-driven initiative dedicated to supporting educational opportunities for young people across the island. Through grants, fundraising, and partnerships with local schools, the fund helps provide resources that enrich student learning—whether through classroom materials, extracurricular programs, field trips, or innovative projects that might otherwise go unfunded.
Its importance on Hatteras Island is substantial: by investing directly in the island’s youth, the fund strengthens the foundation of the community, helps ensure equal access to enriching experiences, and empowers the next generation of islanders to learn, grow, and thrive in a unique coastal environment.
