Avon Volunteer Fire Department In addition, the Department provides mutual aid support to those surrounding communities that, in time of need, may request such assistance.

Incorporated in 1943, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects more than 18,400 people living in the 22.6 square mile area that makes up the Town of Avon, Connecticut. The Department’s mission is to provide fire suppression and prevention, life safety and rescue support, as well as other emergency community support to the citizens of the Town of Avon. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the

Avon Volunteer Fire Department prides itself on the selflessness and dedication of its 159 members – 60 Firefighters, 13 Fire Police, 34 Veteran Members, 18 Explorers, and 34 Lifetime Members, all of whom play a vital role in the safety of Avon. The Department operates six companies and 15 pieces of apparatus, including a brush truck, ladder truck, tanker, rescue vehicle, boat, and pumpers. Four stations are located throughout Town – Company 1 on Darling Drive, Company 2 on Secret Lake Road, Company 3 on West Avon Road, and Company 4 on Huckleberry Hill Road. The Avon Volunteer Fire Department responds to well over 500 calls each year – everything from fires to hazardous materials incidents to motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies. Beyond responding to calls, receiving training, and attending meetings, AVFD volunteers are out in the community giving back in other ways. Members of the Department are actively involved with various education, fire prevention, and charitable programs throughout the community. The AVFD is funded primarily through the Town of Avon’s operating budget. In addition, the Department conducts an annual raffle. In 2009, raffle proceeds were used to purchase a Duty Officer vehicle. Raffle proceeds also help provide volunteer recognition events for the membership as well as enable the purchase of equipment, such as Firefighter Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), or “gear” that is not fully funded by the municipal budget. It costs nearly $3,000 to outfit a firefighter in a bunker coat, pants, helmet, boots, and hood. When repairs can be made to existing gear, the AVFD makes them. However, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has set a standard that no gear be over 10 years old, so purchasing new equipment is mandatory. Over the past 67 years, almost 700 Avon residents have donated their time with the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, and the Department is constantly looking for dedicated volunteers to help with fire fighting, rescue, and administration. To learn more, please call (860) 677-2644 or stop by the Company 1 firehouse located at 25 Darling Drive any Monday evening after 7:00.

It's the 1st. Test them both. 🚨

Take a minute today to test every smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in your home.

While you're at it, check the manufacture date. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and Connecticut now requires newly sold battery-powered smoke alarms to feature sealed 10-year batteries.

Not sure how old yours are? Look for the manufacture date on the back or side of the alarm.

A few minutes today can make a big difference when seconds count.

Earlier this evening, AVFD members were proud to be part of another great Blazer’s Backyard Bash.

From helping keep the dunk tank flowing to meeting residents, answering questions, and connecting with members of our community, it was a wonderful evening filled with laughter, conversation, and hometown pride.

Events like this give us the opportunity to spend time with the people we serve outside of emergency calls — and that’s one of our favorite parts of being a volunteer fire department.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, climb aboard a truck, ask a question, or simply spend a few minutes with us. We’re grateful to be part of such a supportive community and proud to serve it every day. 🚒💦❤️

Most emergency calls happen where ambulances and fire trucks can easily reach the patient.

This wasn’t one of those calls.

Earlier tonight, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to assist a young mountain biker who had been injured deep within a heavily wooded area.

Within minutes, AVFD personnel responded with the department’s ARGO, specialized rescue equipment, and 17 members representing all AVFD companies, including chiefs, firefighters, fire police personnel, and explorers.

Working alongside AMR and the Avon Police Department, crews quickly accessed the patient and determined the safest path for rescue.

The ARGO allowed responders to reach the patient efficiently, but due to the nature of the injuries and the challenging terrain, transporting the patient out of the woods by vehicle was not an option.

Instead, firefighters and EMS personnel packaged the patient into a Stokes basket and carried him nearly half a mile through the woods to a waiting ambulance.

Incidents like this highlight the importance of specialized equipment, continuous training, strong interagency partnerships, and having dedicated responders ready to help wherever an emergency occurs — even when it’s far beyond the end of the road.

We wish the patient a full and speedy recovery and are proud of the teamwork demonstrated by AVFD, AMR, and the Avon Police Department throughout the rescue. 🚒💪

Monday evening, AVFD crews responded to a reported structure fire after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the rear of a residence and quickly called 911.

Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke conditions and immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously conducting an early search of the home for potential victims despite nearly zero visibility conditions and ongoing renovations inside the structure.

Thanks to the fast actions of responding crews, the fire was contained almost entirely to the room of origin without significant extension to the remainder of the home.

Amid the chaos of the incident, crews were also able to safely rescue a pair of pet fish from the residence — a small but meaningful reminder that compassion and caring remain at the heart of the fire service.

Incidents like this underscore the importance of early reporting, continuous training, teamwork, and rapid response are in protecting both lives and property.

We’re proud of the work our members did on scene and grateful for the support of our mutual aid partners — Farmington Fire Department, Tunxis Hose Company No. 1, Canton CT Fire and EMS Department, Simsbury Volunteer Fire Company, and IAFF Local S-15, UConn Fire Rescue, Station 122 - Farmington — who assisted during the incident.

This is what preparedness looks like.

Whether responding across town lines or receiving help when we need it ourselves, these partnerships are critical to keeping our communities safe — day or night.

Interested in being part of something bigger than yourself? The AVFD is always looking for community members ready to step up, serve their neighbors, and become part of the team.

Yesterday, members of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department gathered to recognize and remember the true meaning of Memorial Day — honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

While the weather forced the cancellation of Avon’s Memorial Day Parade, the AVFD was honored to participate in a small indoor ceremony at the Avon Senior Center alongside members of our community.

Following the ceremony, department members and their families came together for our annual Memorial Day BBQ — an opportunity to spend time together, reflect, and recognize the importance of community, service, and remembrance.

We are grateful to all who have served — and especially mindful of those who never made it home.

Today and every day, we remember. 🇺🇸🚒

An Honor to Support a Great Cause!

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department was incredibly honored to have our crew and Engine 13 participate in today’s Concorso Ferrari & Friends at the Farmington Polo Club Grounds today.

While standing alongside some magnificent machinery is always a memorable experience, the true privilege was supporting the meaningful cause at the heart of this event. With this event, Hometown Foundation Inc. does vital work raising funds and awareness for the patients and families at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and we are profoundly grateful to have played a small part in that mission today.

Thank you to the organizers for the invitation, and to everyone who came out to support such an impactful cause for the children in our community.

Memorial Day weekend is here — and for many, it’s the official kickoff to summer. 🇺🇸☀️🔥

As grills fire up across town, AVFD would like to remind everyone to keep BBQ safety in mind while enjoying the holiday weekend with family and friends.

A few quick reminders:
🔥 Keep grills well away from homes, decks, railings, and anything combustible
🔥 Never leave a grill unattended
🔥 Keep children and pets away from hot grills and cooking areas
🔥 Check propane connections for leaks before use
🔥 Make sure charcoal is completely extinguished before disposal

We hope everyone has a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend as we also take time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. ❤️🤍💙

Two members of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department recently traveled to Indianapolis to attend FDIC — one of the premier fire and rescue conferences in the world.

Lieutenant Sam Schwarzhaupt and Firefighter Rich Schiffres spent the week training alongside some of the best firefighters and instructors in the industry, participating in hands-on learning opportunities, workshops, and classes designed to challenge and strengthen their skills.

More importantly, they’re bringing that knowledge back home to Avon.

From new techniques and operational ideas to lessons learned from departments across the country, experiences like FDIC help ensure AVFD members continue growing, evolving, and delivering the highest level of service possible to our community.

Sam and Rich both stepped outside their comfort zones, challenged themselves in new ways, and represented AVFD incredibly well on a national stage — and we couldn’t be more proud of them.

Opportunities like this are also part of what makes the volunteer fire service so rewarding. At the AVFD, members have access to meaningful training experiences that help them grow both personally and professionally while serving their community.

Please join us in thanking Sam and Rich for their dedication to training, learning, and bringing those experiences back to the department and the Town of Avon. 🚒👏

Please join us in congratulating AVFD members Daniel Lake, Ariel Mazara, and Doug Tran on recently earning their Firefighter 1 certification. 👏🚒

Firefighter 1 is a demanding and rigorous program that requires countless hours of classroom instruction, hands-on skills training, teamwork, and testing — all while balancing work, school, family life, and volunteer service commitments.

This certification represents an important milestone in every firefighter’s journey and reflects a tremendous amount of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to serving the community safely and professionally.

We’re incredibly proud of these members for the hard work they’ve put in and excited to see them continue growing within the department.

Congratulations, firefighters — well earned. 🔥

Yesterday, Avon VFD crews were dispatched to a routine smoke detector alarm. But when our team walked around to the back of the building, they weren't met with smoke—they were met with water pouring out from around a sealed door!

Our crews forced entry and found a large pipe burst that had already filled the room with several feet of water. Teamwork kicked in, the main valve was quickly located and shut down, and major property damage was prevented.

That’s the reality of volunteer firefighting: you train for everything, because you never truly know what’s on the other side of the door until you get there.

If you want a challenge and a way to truly impact your community, we want you on our crew. Message us or stop by the station to find out how to join.
