Dear Avon Lake Community,

We’re thrilled to share that the Lorain County Board of Elections has completed the recount for Issue 16, and the results are now certified.

Issue 16 has officially passed!

After three election cycles, thousands of conversations and tireless advocacy from people like you, we’ve reached the finish line.

Thanks to your continued support, Avon Lake City Schools will move forward with building a new grades 5–8 middle school and investing $20 million in much-needed repairs to our elementary school buildings. Along with the already-approved Issue 17, which protects staffing and services, this is a huge win for our students, teachers, staff and entire community.

The long-term impact of these two issues passing is profound. Students will learn in safer, healthier and more modern environments. Teachers and staff will have the resources they need to do their jobs effectively and sustainably. And the Avon Lake community will benefit from a stronger, more vibrant public school system that preserves property values, attracts new families and reflects the values we hold dear.

These victories didn’t happen overnight. They were the result of countless volunteer hours, grassroots outreach and a shared belief in the power of public education. Whether you knocked on doors, donated, talked to your neighbors or voted—you helped make this happen.

This campaign has always been about more than buildings—it’s been about believing in what our kids deserve. It’s about honoring our teachers, supporting our staff and protecting the future of Avon Lake.

We’ve fought hard together, and today, we get to celebrate the promise of what’s to come. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for showing up, again and again, with passion, purpose and love for this community.

We did it, Avon Lake!

Dear Avon Lake Community,

The Lorain County Board of Election has certified the results from the May 6 election and the official vote totals are:

Issue 16 (bond) passed with 3,531 votes (50.14%)
Issue 17 (emergency operating levy) passed with 3,748 votes (53.18%)
Click here to view the official results.

While this is incredible news, we’re not quite over the finish line just yet.

Because Issue 16 passed by a margin of just 20 votes (0.28%), it triggers an automatic recount under Ohio law, which applies to any race decided by less than 0.5%. That recount has been scheduled for May 28.

We’ll share updates on the recount as soon as more information is available. Stay tuned—and thank you again for your support!

“Official finalized results will be published after the Board of Elections’ meeting May 20. Recounts for races within a 0.5 percent margin will be decided upon at that time.

That means that some races that went down to the wire might take several weeks to officially decide.”

Turnout across the county eclipsed 15 percent, according to unofficial results. Board of Elections Chairman Paul Adams predicted on Monday that the number could dwindle to between 8 and 10 percent, but attributed the higher turnout to more people coming to vote in cities like Avon Lake and the weath...

Dear Avon Lake Community,

16 votes. That’s how close it was.

According to unofficial election results, Issue 16 passed by a margin of just 16 votes—only 0.22%. This narrow result triggers an automatic recount under Ohio law. Issue 17 passed with a stronger margin—by 444 votes or 6.36%.

While we await the official results and the upcoming recount (which must take place within 10 days of the official declaration of the need for a recount), we want to pause and say one thing from the bottom of our hearts:

Thank you.

Thank you for your support, your time, your conversations, your donations, your letters to the editor, your social media posts and most of all—your belief in the power of strong public schools.

Every single vote mattered. Every single voice was heard. And together, we moved our community forward in a big way.

This campaign—and the two before it—have been long and challenging, but also deeply meaningful. They’ve been about more than just passing a bond and levy. They’ve been about standing up for our students, teachers, staff and the future of Avon Lake.

We will keep you informed as the recount process unfolds. But today, we just want to say thank you—for standing with us.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Michelle Witten

Our schools are preparing students for the world of the future.

We must continue to do so, with innovative, creative and technologically advanced spaces that are safe and conducive to learning.
