Some people leave a mark on your life and your community that time simply cannot erase. Dick was one of those people.

For an incredible 70 years, Dick was a member of the American Legion, faithfully serving as part of our Legion Family and becoming a mainstay of so many of the activities and traditions that have brought us together through the years. But his legacy cannot be measured simply by the number of years he belonged. It is found in the people who loved him, the memories he helped create, and the values he quietly passed along to those around him.

One of the things our Auxiliary will always be especially grateful for was the opportunity to help Dick place flags on the graves of our veterans at the Avoca Cemetery before Memorial Day. For many years, this was something he faithfully took care of, and when he allowed us to begin helping him, it meant more than simply placing flags.

He was teaching us.

He was showing us the importance of remembering those who served, of honoring those who came before us, and of making sure these traditions continue from one generation to the next. We were honored to walk those cemetery rows under his careful watch, thankful to lighten the work for him, and even more thankful for what we learned from him along the way.

There are some people who are simply woven into the memories of a place, an organization, and a family. Their absence is felt because their presence meant so much.

Dick was one of those people.

Our American Legion Auxiliary Unit extends our deepest sympathy to Dick’s family, friends, and everyone in our Legion Family who loved him. We are incredibly grateful for his 70 years of service, friendship, example, and devotion.

The flags will continue to be placed. The veterans will continue to be remembered. And each time we carry on that tradition, a little piece of Dick will be there with us.

Rest in peace, Dick. You were so very loved, and you will be remembered always. 🇺🇸

Wear the poppy today and throughout Memorial Day weekend as one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors who willingly served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

Poppy donations are used exclusively for veteran and military purposes. Every donation makes a difference!
