It is NATIONAL POPPY DAY!!

Wear the poppy today and throughout Memorial Day weekend as one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors who willingly served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

Poppy donations are used exclusively for veteran and military purposes. Every donation makes a difference!

Did you know there is a National Poppy Day?? There is!!! It is ALWAYS the Friday before Memorial Day.

The American Legion Family asks that you wear a poppy on National Poppy Day to remember all of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Be sure to get a poppy so you can be ready to wear it on Friday, May 22!

Did you know that Wisconsin is one of the few remaining states where veterans assemble poppies? This activity is often performed as a part of a rehabilitation program or activity for hospitalized veterans.

In Flander’s Field was published in 1915 and led to the poppy symbolizing remembrance.

On September 27, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, the poppy became the official memorial flower of the American Legion Family.

Poppies are everywhere around Memorial Day. Have you wondered why??

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium that were enriched with lime from the rubble left by the war.

The poem “In Flander’s Field” was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front line in World War I, to honor soldiers killed in battle.

After the publication of that poem, the red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed by those who fought and those who continue to fight for our country.

2026 Memorial Day Programs

Monday, May 25th we hope you will take time out of your holiday weekend to find a Memorial Day program to remember and honor those who sacrificed everything for our freedoms.

At 9:00am you can join American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit 335 at the Avoca cemetery.

At 11:00am you can join American Legion Post 422 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9440 at the Highland Ambulance garage.
