Helo (Hello) and Croeso (Welcome)!! Today, the St. David's Society of Youngstown hosted our 133rd Annual St. David's Day Banquet at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The event was a success. The decorations, including the Yellow Daffodils provided by Petitti's Garden in Boardman, and the banners brought so much character to our event. The food was delicious! A huge shout out to Shelley and her Team at A La Cart Catering. And, St. David's Society of Youngstown board member Carole's Welsh Cakes were an absolute hit! Entertainment was a success, provided by Harper Kirk, which he put together a new program using the national instrument of Wales, the Harp. It was a great event. Thank you to all who were able to attend and we're thinking of those who couldn't attend. Our board will begin organizing our next big event, our Annual St. David's Day Picnic, which will be held Saturday, September 12th, at the Stacey Pavillionin Austintown Township Park. We hope to see you there!

Helo (Hello) and Croeso (Welcome)!! Today, St. David's Society of Youngstown hosted our 130th Annual Picnic at Stacey Pavillion in Austintown Township Park. The event was a success. The decorations and banners brought so much character to our event. The food was delicious, consisting of pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, a fruit tray catered by A La Cart Catering, and a delicious marble cake made by Giant Eagle of Austintown. Entertainment was a success, provided by Ben Gavitt; he sang a variety of songs a capella. Overall, it was a great event. Thank you to all who were able to attend and we're thinking of those who couldn't attend. Our board will meet in October for our Annual Meeting. Our next big event is our St. David's Day Banquet early next year.

Did you know that, at the 73 metres (240 ft) level of the Washington Monument, there is a message written in Cymraeg?

The Washington Monument was once the tallest structure in the world following its completion in 1884. Whilst it is certainly not in the contest anymore, it is arguably among the more significant and symbolic global landmarks.

The message in Welsh reads:

'Fy iaith, fy ngwlad, fy nghenedl Cymru – Cymru am byth' (English: 'My language, my land, my nation of Wales – Wales for ever').

The stone that the message is written on was imported from a quarry adjacent to Abertawe (Swansea). It was then donated by Welsh citizens living in New York - with the idea believed to have come from a Daniel Jones, who helped found the St David Society within the United States in the 19th century. It helped many displaced Welsh families who emigrated to the US during that time.

Did you know that the founder of Jack Daniel's whiskey, Jack Daniel (1849-1911), was of Welsh origins?

His grandfather, Joseph "Job" Daniel, hailed from Aberystwyth.

We held a meeting of the Board of Trustees, at which we honored Squaw Creek Country Club with the Award for Excellence and discussed plans for the fall picnic.
